TMU | | | B ( f : C i [ \ AAA Still No. AS1505 VIVACIOUS ANN SHERIDAN, who is co-starred with Kent Smith and Bruce Bennett in Warners’ new melodrama, "Nora Prentiss," currently at the Strand Theatre, sings two songs in the film that were written especially for her by Jack Scholl and Moe Jerome. MAT No. 2F Sheridan Is Exciting In Strand’s ‘Nora Prentiss 9 (Prepared Review) Warners’ new melodrama titled, “Nora Prentiss,” with Ann Sheridan in the title role, opened at the Strand Theatre last night. The film, which co-stars Kent Smith and Bruce Bennett with Ann Sheridan, also features an imposing cast of supporting players including Robert Alda, Rosemary DeCamp, John Ridgely and Robert Arthur. The screenplay is based on an original story that has been deftly transformed into a deeply moving film. Set in San Francisco and New York backgrounds, the story relates of a love so overwhelming that it. is to eclipse everything in the lives of Nora Prentiss, and Dr. Richard Talbot (played by Kent Smith). Mutual Attraction Dr. Talbot is married to an overbearing, demanding woman, Lucy (as played by Rosemary DeCamp) and is the father of two children. When his wife and children leave for a weekend, Richard finds himself attracted to a new: patient of his, Nora Prentiss, a night club singer in a run-down club on Fisherman’s Wharf. Nora’s free and relaxed attitude gives Richard a new lease on life and he falls in love with her, just as Nora is attracted to him. After furtive meetings, Nora realizes that it is impossible for them to be happy under the circumstances, and she accepts a singing job at a New York night club, run by her former boss Phil Dinardo (Robert Alda), who is also in love with her. Talbot, desperate about their separation, trumps up a scheme which enables him to change his identity and accompany Nora to New York. Beset with the fear of discovery, Richard begins acting strangely towards Nora and they quarrel vigorously and _ continuously. Richard’s strange secret finally involves both him and Nora in a bizarre situation that leads to the pulsating climax of the film. The tense emotional overtones in “Nora Prentiss” are due to a fine script by N. Richard Nash, which was adapted from an original story by Paul Webster and Jack Sobell, the fine acting of the members of the cast and the taut direction of Vincent Sherman. As Nora, the cynical, refreshing torch singer who lost her heart just when she thought she didn’t have one, Ann Sheridan is a most pleasing combination of talent and beauty. Kent Smith, as Dr. Talbot, is excellent. Robert Alda, who keeps his love for Nora Prentiss ’til the final fadeout, turns in another fine performance, as do the other members of the cast, including Bruce Bennett, Rosemary DeCamp and John Ridgely. “Nora Prentiss’ was _produced by William Jacobs and photographed by James Wong Howe, A.S.C.
