The entire cast jneluding Conrad Nagel, Bernice Claire, Raymond Hackett, and 200 movie “convicts,” lived two weeks in the camp, which is situated in the mountains near Saugus, California. During the day the men lived the lives of prisoners, working on the roads under the hot sun, with Director Mervyn LeRoy as the “guard” and the cameras as “uns.” L. J. O’Connor formerly a special guard at San Quentin prison and in charge of convict labor gangs for many years, acted as technical expert on all prison and camp se quences. Clem Peoples, an officer in the Los Angeles police department, was also a technical advisor. “Numbered Men” is the story of a prison riot, which involuntarily draws into the fight a youth who had but a short time left to serve. The long stretch of years, when youth and beauty fade, is too much, they say. Such women are generally thrown on their own resources to make a living, and it is often a hard struggle for existence while a lover is in the “big house.” Families, too, play an important role, almost invariably working on such women to persuade them to obtain a divorce, which they may legally do if their husband has been convicted as a felon, and thus clear the family name of prison taint. Women with children are generally the most faithful, they say, despite many opportunities for marriage. Yet they point out, at the same time, many amazing cases of fidelity and loyalty of sweethearts over a period of years, fidelity which nothing can shake. Often, unfortunately, a man will get out only to cast such a woman aside for a younger one. The lowest period of despair in a prisoner’s existence comes when the letters begin to stop. These, and many more phases of prison existence are vividly pictured in “Numbered Men,” the cast including Conrad Nagel, Bernice Claire, Raymond Hackett, Tully Marshall and Ralph Ince.
