There is a throat-hurting story, delicately exquisite at times, darkly bitter in other sequences, but always deeply impressive and all-engrossing. There are performances which reach the height of screen acting. Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., for instance, gives so superb an account of himself as to assure the theatre world for all time that he is an artist of rare importance. Leslie Howard, as the lovable (Review) “OUTWARD BOUND” SENSATION OF THE NEW SCREEN YEAR “Outward Bound,” Bros. and Vitaphone — production which opened at the . . Theatre last evening, is a distinct and noteworthy offering. Superbly staged, directed, photographed and acted and possessing a story of mysterious charm it may truthfully be called the most sensational offering of the year. The story is that of two youthful lovers who, returning to the slums of London, after a day in the country, decide, with that passionate unreason so common to youth, that they must belong to each other forever. Realizing that society may be against them they decide to leave this world for a better—and find themselves aboard a phantom ship on a fogbound sea— moving without crew. or captain to the place of judgment. Others, like themselves, are on the ship, though none know their destination. The cast includes Leslie Howard, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Helen Chandler, Beryl Mercer, Dudley Digges, Lyonel Watts, Alison Skipworth and Montagu Love. Robert Milton directed. Don’t let anything prevent you from seeing “Outward Bound.” the Warner wastrel, reaches top. Little Helen Chandler is ethereally lovely. Beryl Mercer as the self-sacrificing charwoman is adorable in her quaint bewilderment. Alison Skipworth is delightful as the widow, Mrs. ClevedenBanks, who is so concerued about her “hyphen.” The perforinances of Dudley Digges, Alec B. Francis, Montagu Love and Lyonel Watts are par excellence. It is difficult to speak other than in superlatives of “Outward Bound,” which is the story of two very young and very wistful lovers who, that they may not part, decide to try the mysteries of the world beyond, and find themselves aboard a mystic ship bound for the place of judgment. So stimulating a picture as “Outward Bound” comes once in a lifetime. We urge, you to give this superb offering your attention. Love worked for one of the New York dailies, and was connected with the drama department, which eventually gave him his opportunity to go on the stage himself. (Review) “OUTWARD BOUND” PERFECT CAST IN THE PERFECT PLAY rg Reiss eae’ Theatre—Warner Bros. present “Outward Bound,’ a Vitaphone production. From the play by Sutton Vane. Adaptation by J. Grubb Alexander. Directed by Robert Milton. The cast includes Leslie Howard, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Helen Chandler, Beryl Mercer, Alec B. Francis, Alison Skipworth, Lyonel Watts, Montagu Love and Dudley Digges. Barely a whispered word escaped the lips of the spectators last night at the .... Theatre as they watched the most impressive Vitaphone version of Sutton Vane’s play, “Outward Bound.” When the picture, however, came to an end there was a genuine outburst of applause. In filming this play Warner Bros. not only secured Robert Milton, who so ably directed the stage production, but the actors—so far as possible— who had been in the original production. The story is that of two youthful lovers of the London slums who, after a glorious day in the country, dreading separation, decide to leave this world for a better. They find themselves aboard a phantom ship, bound through the fog to the regions of judgment. Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. gives a performance of rare beauty as the lad, and Helen Chandler is ethereally appealing as the girl. Leslie Howard is moving as the lovable wastrel, and Beryl Mercer, as a charwoman, and mother of the derelict, who keeps her relationship hidden, ‘that he may not be shamed, is adorable. Alison Skipworth, as the snobbish widow, Mrs. Cleveden-Banks, disturbed about the world’s recognition of her “hyphen,” is a delightful comic relief. Dudley Digges, as the emissary of the unknown, who: judges the voyagers, is impressive. Alec B. Francis is fine as the benign steward of the spirit yoat, and Lyonel Watts is a very believable Rev. William Duke. In short, “Outward Bound” is the sort of play that comes once in a generation. Don’t miss it. “OUTWARD BOUND” A picture to evoke rejoicing from the most fastidious.
