They catch up with him when Keith takes refuge on a stranded whaler in a frozen bay and capture him although O’Toole is slightly wounded in the leg. Keith proves to be an exact likeness of Conniston who has dogged him down, except as to disposition, the captured man having the better of it on that score. On the long trip back Conniston disciplines Keith for an attempted escape by flogging him, but while doing so is exposed to the bitter cold and becomes dangerously ill. With O’Toole helpless and Conniston ill, Keith manages to escape, leaving his two captors to die in the snow. Unable to ease his conscience, he returns for them after he has found shelter.
