Anyone with a passion for travel will thrill to this elaborate musical, which was months in preparation before actual shooting got underway at the Burbank studios. Created in the sweeping style of “Night and Day” and “This Is The Army,” both from the same studio, it is a dazzling musical holiday with Jack Carson, Janis Paige, Don DeFore and a new singing sensation, Doris Day, heading the large cast. The film abounds with music ., and there is is a constant flow “of native tropical rhythms which permeate the general background. Miss Day holds the spotlight for the main singing stanzas, presenting a spirited array of hits from those two ace tunesters, Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn. “It’s. Magic” leads off the tune list. Busby Berkeley, assoeiated with many of Warner Bros.’ memorable musical extravaganzas, is responsible for the dancing ensembles here. The STORY A marital mix-up, plus mistaken identity told against the lush background of a South American cruise. Doris Day, a night club torcher, wins a free trip to the tropics, in return for posing as a rich society woman (Janis Paige). Janis’ husband (Don DeFore) hires a private detective (Jack Carson) to keep tab on her during the trip. However, once Carson sees Doris, he is smitten, and the complications begin to pile up. When the boat docks at Havana, Oscar Levant, who has been courting Doris unsuccessfully, comes on board, but gets a chilly reception from the girl. The confusion mounts as the boat proceeds to Trinidad and other colorful ports. In Rio, the Casino management hires Doris as the new ‘society singing sensation’, but her debut is threatened when Janis suddenly appears. However Janis graciously introduces Doris on the opening night, and Carson is among the guests to give her a resounding hand in the great finale. se vO, (Running time: 99 minutes) 25, brought it back to the States. Don DeFore, foils between the two, and a talented newcomer, Doris Day, hops from brassy comedy to slick singing. Not stopping there, Oscar Levant wisecracks and plays his piano brilliantly. S. Z. Sakall worries and frets; Fortunio Bonanova storms and gestulates; Avon Long struts to “Tourist Trade,” with the color by Technicolor dominating the entire merry jaunt. A pleasure cruise to South America provides the setting for this gay entertainment. Stopovers at Havana, Rio and Trinidad introduce riotous color scenes, and breath-taking choreographic patterns by the dancers. Comedy is in the front throughout, with a barfly, played briefly by Johnny “Berkes, a sharp standout in one of the greatest comedy routines seen in some time. Miss Day impresses for her ease and command before the cameras. Her song delivery is neat, and she is able to wear costumes smartly. Director Curtiz is quite enthusiastic over her talent, and it is well displayed here. “It’s Magic” and “I’m In Love” song's are two of her best numbers. : Strand patrons were loud and enthusiastic over this elaborate musical—a great show. Doris Day Makes Film Debut In Musicomedy Doris Day, who makes her film debut in Warner Bros.’ brilliant musical, “Romance On The High Seas,” a Michael Curtiz production, with color by Technicolor, was once a dancer with Fanchon & Mareo units.
