She hails from the dance band circuit, this is her first film, and according to advance report, she turns in a striking performance which promises very big things for her in Hollywood. She sings, clowns and wears clothes with the greatest of ease, and projects that certain something in the way of personality. “It’s Magic” leads off the array of hits from Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne. “Romance On The High Seas,” as the title implies, is a musical cruise to South America, with stopovers in Havana, Trinidad and Rio. But it is the treatment of Technicolor pastels which makes “Romance On The High Seas” such a startling picture. ‘Romance On High Seas”’ Sparkles With Girls, Tunes Stage One at Warner Bros. was closed tighter than a vault, and the sweating cops who shooed visitors away from the doors said they hadn’t seen anything like it in years. Everybody wanted to get in. Not since the days of “Night and Day” and ‘My Wild Irish Rose” have so many long limbed, beauties assembled for high kicks and vocalizing. Busby Berkeley, distinguished Hollywood dance director and beauty appraiser, returned to Warner’s for the musical sequences of ‘Romance On The High Seas,” a Michael Curtiz production, coming soon to the Strand Theatre. Jack Carson, Janis Paige, Don Defore, and the new singing sensation, Doris Day are the stars, but they were shoved into the background during the days that Berkeley picked the girls. “They’re better than ever,” Berkeley said, meaning, of course, the girls. “Their legs are prettier, their faces are fresher, their posture is better, and I think they even dance better.” Berkeley was making the comparison of Hollywood’s 1948 dancing girls with those of 10 to 15 years ago when he directed the loveliest in town for the musical scenes in such pictures as “Footlight Parade,” “42nd Street,” and “The Golddiggers” series. “One thing I’m sure of,” the dance director continued, “These girls are ambitious. For the first musical under his own productior® banner at Warner Bros., the distinguished director created a lush casting of stars around a key featured spot and then tossed into that spot a new discovery.
