STORY
Fortune-seeking, beautiful Clio Dulaine (INGRID BERGMAN) arrives in New Orleans with her servant, Angelique (FLORA ROBSON) and the dwarf Cupidon (JERRY AUSTIN). There, Clio meets Clint Maroon (GARY COOPER), a cowboy from Texas. An immediate and intense mutual love springs up. However, Clint leaves New Orleans for Saratoga and writes to tell Clio that the town is filled with millionaires, especially one Bartholomew Van Steed (JOHN WARBURTON). Clio
goes to Saratoga Springs intending to ensnare Van Steed into mar
riage. Clint makes an agreement with Van Steed and fellow financiers to clear the Saratoga Trunk Line from a rival combine. The Texan and his gang save the Trunk Line through spectacular fighting. Back in Saratoga Springs, Clio attends the season’s brightest event, the costume ball. Van Steed is about to announce their engagement when Clint appears. Clio hurls herself at him, loudly proclaiming her love for him, unmindful of Van Steed and the hundreds of onlookers.

STORY
Private detective Philip Marlowe (HUMPHREY BOGART), summoned to the home of bed-ridden General Sternwood, meets the general’s two daughters, Vivian (LAUREN BACALL) and Carmen (MARTHA VICKERS). From his client, Marlowe learns that Carmen is being blackmailed. Vivian, in an effort to help her troubled sister, joins forces with Marlowe. Their investigation, bringing with it murder, leads them to Eddie Mars (JOHN RIDGELY), a big-time racketeer who would like Marlowe out of the way. Marlowe falls into the clutches of Eddie’s gunmen at their hideout where he also findsVivian who helps him escape. Rushing with her to confront Mars, Marlowe traps the underworld leader into confessing the murder of Carmen’s fiancee, believed missing, and convincing Vivian that her wild sister was his accomplice. Outside, Mars’? henchmen await to wipe out Marlowe. Instead, the detective forces Mars to go first and the latter meets death at his own direction. The case closes, Vivian and Marlowe admit their love.
