Tailored Suits Favored By Kay Francis Now The Vogue
By LAURA BENHAM
Kay Francis can rest smartly on her sartorial laurels this season! Because of the current trend of fashion toward tailored clothes for morning, noon and night, Kay’s position as “‘tops’’ among the best-dressed women of Hollywood is secure.
This is the edict of Orry-Kelly, fashion designer and chief stylist of Warner Brothers Studios, where Miss Francis has
just finished the stellar role in “Stranded” which comes to the sehvaniecermeeesnycos Theatre Saeco
“The vogue for tailored clothes has so developed during the last few years that today it dominates the mode for every hour of the day,” he says. * “And who can wear the slim, simple tailored styles as well as Kay?
“She has the height, posture, figure and grace that tailored clothes demand in order to look well. In fact, I would definitely class her as the tailored type— therefore, she is at her best dur
ing the years when tailored clothes are leading the fashion parade.”
This is good news to all other girls of the Kay Francis type, who naturally look to her for information on What to Wear and How to Wear It. And since “Stranded” is largely a “tailored” picture, it will be a great help to these girls from a fashion standpoint. For most of her costumes in this picture are tailored.
Miss Francis plays the part of a social worker with an income of her own—thus her costumes are those of a working girl, but a wealthy one. And while the average girl can’t afford the number of outfits that Kay has, neither does the average working girl do as much rushing around. For in “Stranded,” the lovely Miss Francis dashes from steamship dock to transcontinental train, from taxi to = ‘Office;
from
home of wealth to tenement dwelling of one of her cases— and on every occasion she is gowned appropriately. And the average working girl can take a tip or two from Kay in the style and type of frocks that she wears.
In certain later scenes of the picture, Miss Francis wears evening gowns—and even in these, she manages to look smooth and suave and trimly tailored. She prefers shimmering satins that cling sleekly to her figure for her romantic moments—and who can blame her? And don’t forget, simple satin or crepe evening gowns will remain smart long after the frills and ruffles of anther type have become dowdy.
In fact, after seeing “Stranded,’ many girls who have never before considered themselves the tailored type will probably join the legion of Kay Francis followers.
“Stranded” has an all star cast headed by Miss Francis and George Brent and includes Patricia Ellis, Donald Woods, Rob

Through the water-front headquarters of this service pass all types and nationalities; hopeful young men who see nothing but opportunity in the new world; sad-eyed mothers with no thought except to find a refuge from the storms of South Europe; bewildered children hanging to the coat of a bereaved father who has crossed the ocean in search of forgetfulness; busy officials patiently trying to understand and to explain; gray-haired couples huddled in corners waiting for American sons and daughters to find them.
Thirty-one nationalities were represented on the big immigration dock built on the Warner Bros. lot, in exact reproduction of the dock of a large American port.
A group of doll-like Chinese “brides” mingle with peasants from France—a riotous mixture of colors and costumes.
The manner in which newcomers to these shores are handled, is shown in all its interesting detail.
