'The aunt suspects that Betsy is back because she has missed her sweetheart, Tom Squires (Fred Lawrence), whom Marcia dislikes. Abigail Prentiss (Sybil Jason) another niece, looks up her old friend Asa Plunkett (Guy Kibbee), and she finds him in jail. 2 The townspeople have long ridiculed Asa’s assertion that there is buried treasure nearby, he being known as the biggest liar in the county. But Abigail believes him. Her faith is confirmed when she finds an old map indicating where the treasure lies. She takes it to Asa, who is so excited about the discovery that he breaks jail in order to start an immediate search. Abigail is missed, and a search is launched. ; Before he starts to hunt for the treasure on Bird Island, Asa shows his map to George Chester (Dick Purcell), who determines to highjack the treasure with the assistance of his girl, Mabel (Maude Allen). Asa and ‘Tom sail for the island, and discover that Abigail and Betsy Ann are stowaways. They find the buried chest promptly, and its treasures are up to expectations, Tom and Betsy Ann go back to the boat to get a lantern. George and Mabel attempt to take the treasure from Asa and Abigail. In the struggle, George is killed by his own gun. The sheriff (Granville Bates) arrives with Marcia, Asa is taken to jail, now accused of murder. Abigail is miserable, and Aunt Marcia frantic, for even though she has been very critical of Asa and his tall tales, she loves him. In fact, they would have married years before if Asa hadn’t gone fishing on what was to have been the wedding day. At the trial, Mabel distorts the facts to make it seem that Asa killed George without provocation. Abigail, in her child-like desire to have people think her friend is really a killer, confirms Mabel’s story. But the chauffeur (Gus Shy), an ex-convict, forces the truth from Mabel, and Asa is freed. Marcia wants to marry him, but Asa—as before —goes fishing.
