Your Own Mock Trial: Using the story of the picture outlined in the publicity section as your statement of facts, a mock trial shouldn’t be at all difficult to prepare. A couple of the town’s leading lawyers to serve as counsel for prosecution and defense. Prominent members of the citizenry sitting in the jury box. A police judge or magistrate presiding. . Theatre comes in arranging all details and gives its stage for trial. It should be interesting, with the facts as presented, to see what decision the court makes. Give all participants tickets to see the picture. Picture and playdates can get plenty of tie-in publicity via announcements of the mock trial in papers and on cards. For Debating Teams: Westbrook Pegler, United Features columnist, has taken many a rap at the unethical practices of criminal lawyers. Other people defend them. Since Perry Mason is a criminal lawyer start the town debating about the lawyers. Can be used as a contest for best letters on: ‘How far is a lawyer justified in going in the interests of his client?’’ S. P. C. A. Cooperattsn: Get behind the S. P. C. A. in a city-wide drive for the better treatment of dogs. Investigate all reports about cruel and inhuman treatment and keep the newspapers humming with the dog stories telling in publicity of typical case of dog in the picture. Howling Dog Legend: Many people believe in the old legend that a howling dog foretells of a coming death. Offer passes for the most interesting letters telling about such an incident. Stories need not be true, as long as they’re interesting. 2 Uses For Ad Mat: Mat No. 17 in the ad section shows Warren William holding a board on which is written the following message: “A beautiful woman is accused of murder—she must die if convicted. I find the wrong solution to the crime and prove to a jury I am right. And now I challenge you to prove I am wrong. (signed) Perry Mason.” You can take this mat of the letter, print it up on regular news stock and use it as a throwaway, if you’re looking for something catchy and yet inexpensive. Another angle is to blow it up for display purposes in your lobby. Making it into a cut-out will add to the effect. Solving Local Crimes: Has there been an unsolved murder-mystery in town, lately? If so, here’s a contest your newspaper might go for. Offer prizes for the best solution to the crime, submitted in the form of a short story, with Perry Mason solving the crime. Contestants must keep to the facts already found, but can have Perry Mason introduce new facts which tend to solve the crime.
