High comedy is the order of the day in Warner Bros.’ newest film riot, “The Horn aide, Fran (Dolores Moran). Fran, rebuffed by Archie, decides to end her life.
Blows At Midnight,” which co-stars Jack Benny and Alexis Smith and is currently at ence ee ee Theatre. Benny, in a distinct departure from his previous film roles, plays Athanael, a harmless if somewhat addlepated angel sent down to Earth as a modern embodiment of the legend of Gabriel and his horn. Above, reading from left to right; (first): Athanael is briefed by The Chief (Guy Kibbee) as the heavenly Elizabeth (Alexis Smith) looks on. Athanael’s task is simple—to descend to Earth with a specially treated trumpet and blow a few notes of doom exactly on the stroke of midnight. Athanael restrains her but loses his only chance to carry out his commission. (Third) : Two fallen angels, Osidro (Allyn Joslyn) and Doremus (John Alexander), discuss Athanael’s predicament. (Fourth) : Athanael plays a horn that’ s literally “‘out of this world” in a swing orchestra. Labeled “sour,” Athanael is soon unemployed. This leaves him free to engage in a series of adventures worldly enough to try the soul of the sturdiest angel. (Fifth) : To extricate him from the un-heavenly mess he gets into, Elizabeth descends in person. Her influence is salutary but also romantic, tending to confound his already confused efforts to fulfill his mission. But, providentially, Athanael manages to straighten things out for a happy surprise ending.
