MOST UNUSUAL DRAMA
SCREAM SPECIALIST DISPLAYS TALENT IN “MAD GENIUS”
(Current—Plant 4th Day)
Alice Doll is registered in Hollywood casting offices as a scream specialist. Her brand of scream recorded over the microphone better than those of any of several hundred other ladies tested by Warner Bros. for “The Mad Genius,” starring John Barrymore—the current attraction at the Theatre.
You will see Alice near the climax of “The Mad Genius,” when the audience is suddenly thrown into a panic by the sight of the distorted body of the fanatical dance impresario Tsarakov — played by Mr. Barrymore—on the _ stage before them.
As is usual in real life, there had to be one woman in that audience
who exceeded and _ preceded _ all others in screaming. It was then that Alice was called into use,
placed close to the microphones and coached by Director Curtiz as to when and how to let off steam.
“The Mad Genius” is a spectacular and melodramatic story of the Russian Imperial Ballet, with Marian Marsh, Donald Cook, Charles Butterworth, Luis Alberni, Carmel Myers and many others in support of ‘Mr. Barrymore. The ballet scenes were made under the direetion of Adolph Bolm, a former ballet master and solo dancer of the real Russian Ballet.

John Barrymore considers “The Mad Genius” his most dramatic vehicle. Based in some respects
upon the life and work of Serge Diaghileff, world famous master of the Russian Ballet, the character is nevertheless a fictitious creation.
The brief ballet scenes, against which the powerful drama of “The Mad Genius” unfolds, were in charge of Adolph Bolm, one of Diaghileff’s associates and himself one of the greatest ballet masters and dancers of modern times,
