Miss Daniels believed, and studio officials agreed with her, that the blonde coloring was more in keeping with the role she plays in “The Maltese Falcon,”—an adventurous young woman who is not afraid to risk life or reputation in the pursuit of her baffling ambition. The blonde coiffure sets off Miss Daniels’ striking beauty in remarkable fashion but takes away from the softness of her face—an effect deliberately sought by the star and the studio’s makeup department in their efforts te, add uncertainty to the character she plays. Blonde women are always interesting, in the public’s imagination at least, and they are less easily catalogued as good or bad than their darker sisters. So Miss Daniels’ blondeness adds to the intrigue of the role and increases the mystery of the story. Ricardo Cortez, Thelma Todd, Dudley Digges, Robert Elliott, Una Merkel, Otto Matiesen are others included in the cast of “The Maltese Falcon.” Roy Del Ruth directed. “The Maltese F alcon,” Warner Bros. Theatre last night in a daring role in ‘‘The Maltese Falcon,’’ a mysteriousmelodrama which is an adaptation of the famous novel by Dashiell Hammett, who was for years a Pinkerton detective, and is therefore able to speak with authority, not only of the pursuer but the pursued. Miss Daniels is vividly effective as Miss Wonderly, the strange and alluring adventuress, who keeps not only the characters in the play, but audiences as well, guessing whether she is the leader of the weird crime ring, or the sinned-against victim of circumstances. The doubtful heroine conquers all the men she meets except the one man who interests her—the head of a detective agency, who, while mistrusting her motives, feels the fascination of her personality. Ricardo Cortez portrays the man in question—accomplishing the difficult feat of making a detective liked—and transforming the unsympathetic role into a forceful and believable one. Dudley Digges, famous in so many Theatre Guild performances is effective as Gutman, a master mind. Robert Elliott is again a detective but with a difference. Other intriguing characters are created by Otto Matiesen, Oscar Apfel, Walter Long, Dwight Frye, J. Farrell MacDonald and Agostino Borgato. Una Merkel, remembered for her portrayal of Ann Rutledge in “Abraham Lincoln” and lovely Thelma Todd are the only women in the cast beside Miss Daniels. The Hammett novel was adapted for the screen by Maude Fulton, Lucien Hubbarg and Brown Holmes. Roy Del Ruth directed with fine understanding. “The Maltese Falcon” is glorious entertainment.
