Theatre (Review Featuring the Story) The large audience at the Theatre last night, at the opening performance of ‘‘The Maltese Falcon’’ starring Bebe Daniels, gave unmistakable evidence that the muchheralded thriller was all that had been claimed for it and more. It is a spellbinder, and what is more—a different sort of spellbinder—for Dashiell Hammett, from whose novel the picture is taken—has written into the story, his experience of detectives and their prey—gained over long years as a Pinkerton man. Miss Wonderly, the heroine if she can be so-called—is a baffling adventuress who keeps every ——bedy guessing to the last moments of the play whether she is what she seems to be—or what the detectives think she is. The fuss is all about the statuette of a bird—presumably a faleon—the body of which is ¢erammed with priceless jewels — es@ospirited from Hong Kong — PGirange means—causing much exemient on the way — several murGere — and many tricks by the ly-wise Miss Wonderly — to Menke herself appear more sinned Peemmst than sinning. The adaptation of the Hammett novel is by Maude Fulton, Lucien Hubbard and Brown Holmes. Roy Del Ruth directed. Scenes of the hair-raising mystery are laid in San Francisco. “The Maltese Falcon” is in the tradition of the best in mystery and detective fiction. It is the sort that makes millions of the great, the near great and ordinary mortals, burn the midnight oil and feel their hair rising in answer to their tingling nerves. It is an escape from ordinary commonplaces, and so impersonal that it is a rest for mind and body. The role of Miss Wonderly is a daring one and the versatile star of “Rio Rita,” “Dixiana” and “My Past” gives a vital performance.
