From Monterey, headquarters of the American army in California following the taking over of the province from Mexico in 1848, Captain John Holmes is dispatched southward by his Colonel to undertake an unofficial mission for the government.
His special destination is the home of Don Jose Castanares, wealthy ranch-owner, and bitterly opposed to the American occupation. To protect the Californians. in their property, the government has ordered the registration of all land grants at the government land-office. Failure to do this by a certain date will cause the land to be declared public domain. It is to convince Castanares and the other Californians that such registration is necessary for their own good that Captain Holmes has undertaken his mission.
Before he reaches the Rancho Castanares, Holmes saves the life of Dolores Castanares in a runaway, without knowing who she is. By so doing, he earns the girl’s gratitude and admiration, as well as the sworn enmity of her suitor, Luis Gonzales, son of her father’s old but treacherous friend. Faced by ruin himself, the elder Gonzales has been urging a marriage between his son and Castanares’ daughter, and has also backed up Castanares in his determination not to register his lands. Gonzales’ plan is to move in on them and claim title to them himself, once they have been declared in the public do main.
Holmes’ arrival at the Castanares ranch frustrates Gonzales’ schemes. The American convinces Castanares
