“Man From Monterey” Stars John Wayne as U. S. Cavalry Officer
As a dashing cavalry officer in the columns of Generals Kearney and Fremont, whose troops occupied California in the name of the American government following the war with Mexico, John Wayne comes to the .... Theatre in “The Man From Monterey,” the most pretentious and
colorful production he has made under the four-star banner this season.
As Captain John Holmes, U.S. A., Wayne is charged with an ambassadorial errand to the great landowners of California, to persuade them that the United States government, in requiring the registration of their ancient land grants, is doing so to protect their property.
An exceptional cast was chosen to support Wayne in “The Man From Monterey. ” Ruth Hall, recently seen in the leading role of “The Kid From Spain,” starring Eddie Cantor, plays the part of the dusky-eyed senorita who charms the gallant soldier. Luis Alberni, as Felipe, the gypsy companion of Capt. Holmes, is an internationally known actor equally at home in English and Spanish roles, and a Broadway favorite before he came to Hollywood.
Others in the cast include the talented Mexican actress, Nina Quartero, seen in the role of Anita Garcia, daughter of the innkeeper, and the discarded sweetheart of Don Luis Gonzales, played by Donald Reed; Francis Ford, Lafayette McKee, Lillian Leighton, Chris Martin and Charles Whittaker.
“lhe Man From Monterey” was produced for Warner Bros. by Leon Schlesinger and directed by Mack V. Wright, who has several of the earlier Wayne pictures to his credit. The story is an original by Lesley Mason, who also wrote the continuity and dialogue.

John Wayne Western Hero
Learned to
Ride as a Boy
OHN WAYNE, romantic hero of “The Man From Monterey,” the Leon Schlesinger four-star Western now showing at the
. Theatre, is a native Californian born and raised on a large
ranch in Southern California.
From the time he was able to walk and wander around the stables, young Wayne began to learn about horses, a subject which has been
of absorbing interest to him ever since.
hours in the saddle, John speedily became a splendid rider and while still in his early ’teens was breaking and training his own mounts.
During his grammar school days, John lived in the city, the ranch being too far distant for daily commuting. However, every day found him astride his favorite pony for an hour or so to keep himself and mount in trim for the long ride home and back each week-end. As most of his school chums had only bicycles as means of transportation, John naturally was the envy of all the small boys in his neighborhood and was constantly besieged on all sides for a ride on his pony. Thus to vary the monotony, he often swapped a ride on his horse for a spin on some friend’s bicycle.
His body developing rapidly due to his rugged, outdoor life, he found himself looked upon with favor by the football coaches at the University of Southern California when he enrolled at that institution. Knowing nothing of football, he nevertheless showed a surprising aptitude for the game and eventually made the Varsity squad, where he covered himself with glory.
His native ability as a horseman has enabled him to stay in the front ranks of Western screen stars without resorting to the use of doubles for the hazardous stunts called for in his pictures.
