The drama of “The Man From Monterey,” in which Wayne has the role of an American army officer, is laid on one of these huge estates. Most of the scenes of the picture were actually taken on the wooded hillsides and rolling meadows of the former Rancho La Providencia, on which the Warner-First National studio now stands.

These vast ranches were grants from the King of Spain to loyal subjects who desired to make their homes in the New World. Many of the grants went back into the eighteenth century. Later grants, after Mexico declared her independence from Spain in 1833, were made by the Mexican government on the same immense scale. California in those days was known as Alta California, or Upper California, and was the northernmost province of Mexico.
Ruth Hall is John Wayne’s leading woman in “The Man From Monterey” as the beautiful Dolores Castanares. Other members of the cast are Luis Alberni, Donald Reed, Nina Quartero, Francis Ford, Lafe McKee and Charles Whittaker. Mack V. Wright directed the picture for Leon Schlesinger, the producer. Lesley Mason wrote the story and screen play.

Drawn by four horses, these lowslung vehicles were built to ride easily over the rolling roads of the 1840’s. Unlike other coaches, they had no. driver. Two _ postillons, mounted on the forward horses, served in place of coachmen.
