She was born in Emporia, Kansas, and later lived in Salt Lake City and Los Angeles. Like Alice White, Carmel Myers, Bessie Love, and other screen luminaries, she attended Hollywood High School. She did the usual extra work before Mack Sennett discovered her flair for comedy. She worked in Sennett comedies for five years with only an occasional short vacation.
