The Story HARLES “BEAUTY” STEELE was one of Canada’s most brilliant lawyers, best-dressed snobs, cruelest husbands and hardest drinkers. Following his brilliant and successful defense of a murderer, his brother-inlaw, Billy, asks him to go home to his wife, after one of his characteristic nica He goes home but accuses his wife of an affair with a former over.
Discovering Billy has stolen $10,000 from his safe, Steele traces him to a gambling den where Billy confesses giving it to a notorious gambler. He tries to get it from the gambler, who refuses to relinquish it. A terrific battle ensues. Steele is knocked unconscious and his body thrown in the river. Joe Portugas, whose acquittal he obtained at a recent murder trial, rescues him in a rowboat and takes him to a village in the heart of the woods. Here he is nursed by Joe, the village cure and Rosalie Evantural, who works at the post office. Steele soon recovers physically, but his memory is practically blank.
Steele, who has forgotten his name, goes under that of Charles Mallard and apprentices himself to a tailor. He and Rosalie have fallen in love and decide to be married immediately. On the eve of the wedding, as he turns a page of music for Rosalie, he remembers doing the same thing for some one else. This thought leads to other thoughts until he is able to piece out his past. He realizes that he is married and will be accused of absconding with $10,000, which belonged to one of his clients. He drops his lovable Charles Mallard personality and again becomes ‘‘Beauty”’ Steele. Loving Rosalie too much, he refuses to marry her and she becomes engaged to a landholder, whom her father has selected for her.
When Steele learns of this, he is unable to endure it, and rushes back to Rosalie. She sends him to the city to see if he can obtain his freedom. Back home, he finds that his wife, believing him dead, has married her old sweetheart and is quite happy and Billy, reformed, is living with them. Billy pleads, bezs and threatens to make him “‘stay’’ dead and when he refuses to promise, Billy follows him to the north woods and shoots him.
