A couple of years ago Dick was a West Point cadet in ‘‘Blirtation Walk.’’. After that he was an Annapolis midshipman in ‘‘Shipmates Forever.’’ Yesterday he had his first local showing as a ‘‘leatherneck’’ in ‘‘The Singing Marine,”’ a delightful musical comedy which opened at the Theatre. Maybe that’s the end of Dick’s career in uniform for Uncle Sam. If so— too bad! But leave it to Warners! Prob ably they’ll dope something out for him. They ’ve yet to make an aviation picture starring the golden-voiced Mr. Powell. In the judgment of this reviewer, ‘‘The Singing Marine’’ is the best of the Dick Powell service pictures. The yarn runs like this: Dick is a bashful buck private in the San Diego barracks, in love with a waitress (Doris Weston, a newcomer to films), but afraid to tell her of his affection. She’s been saving her money to go to New York and get a tryout on the celebrated Major’s amateur hour.
