Natural Tears an Asset to Notes OF
Young Film Actresses
Doris Weston, New Warner Starlet, Praised For Her Realistic Sobbing
Any girl who can cry without the aid of an onion stands a fair chance of becoming a screen star.
One of the most difficult tasks an actress faces is spon-—
taneous weeping. And genuine crying scenes don’t brook the use of glycerine, onions or the prop man’s atomizer. An actress very often has to ery when there is no chance
of faking it. Some of them can’t do that. So they cry with their backs to the audience. They heave their shoulders and squeal a little bit and that has to pass for crying.
But when she can really release the tears, she has a prerequisite to dramatics.
Doris Weston, the young actress who won a Major Bowes amateur hour contest in New York and got a 10-week engagement at the Radio City Rainbow Room and a movie contract out of it, didn’t know she could ery.
Doris, whose first film role is the lead opposite Dick Powell in ‘¢The Singing Marine,’’ a Warner Bros. musical comedy that MOUS TOK Diyos ccf ecescseeeeesseoee at the = A Ee wee. Theatre. discovered that she was an actress in a threehour crying session on the set. It was a scene in which she had to ery spontaneously and copiously.
Director Ray Enright told her she would have to ery a lot. He told her no one would be able to help her because it would be a close-up.
Doris stood before the camera md made a grimace. She didn’t

say anything for a moment, but she looked as though she were thinking.
Suddenly she began to ery. Enright hollered ‘‘Roll ’em! We’ll take this as long as it lasts.??
Then, for three hours after that, Doris turned the tears on and off. She was photographed in long shot and close-up, from half a dozen different angles. It all took three hours. When it was all over she stepped away from the cameras.
There was no doubt than that the girl had cried very much. Her eyes were quite red. Her nose was a little red, too, and she sniffled.
‘*What,’’? her director asked, ‘“made you ery so well???
‘TI was thinking,’’ Doris replied, ‘‘how sad it would be if all of this turned out to be a dream or if I failed, or if I had to try to get on an amateur hour again.’’
‘“Well,’? Enright said, ‘‘you belong to the sorority of actresses who can ery without onions or glycerine. There aren’t many. You ought to feel pretty good about 1,22

Started Tap Dancing To Please Girl, Now Is Top-Ranking Film ‘Tapper’
Lee Dixon is still working with numbers.
He started his career in Brooklyn as a very young business man with ambitions to become a Certified Publie <Accountant. He got side-tracked*a little. He wound up as a dancer, but he says he’s still working with numbers.
The numbers Lee works with are the Busby Berkeley

In “The Singing Marine” Lee plays a “straight” role in addition to doing some plain and fancy hoofing. He will be seen as a dancer in the numbers known as “Night Over Shanghai” and “The Lady Who Couldn’t Be Kissed.” The first song was written by Johnny Mercer and Harry Warren, the» second by Warren with Al Dubin.
Lee took up dancing five years ago because he admired the hoofing of a young man who was also-admired by a red-headed girl Lee liked. He decided that if he had to be a tap-dancer to hold her affections he had better get started.

His latest, worn in
He learned by himself. He hoofed for hours on end. He still hoofs all the time. The studio still photographers have to use speed cameras to get a still of him. At the end of five years he is in the movies, a featured player being prepared for stardom.
There were leaner moments before he made good in Hollywood. He hoofed all over Brooklyn. He hoofed in Florida and in Boston. He hoofed wherever they paid him.
Most of Lee’s dances are inspired. He ad libs his numbers, never does the same thing twice. That makes it a little tough for the camera man so they tell Lee where they want him to dance. He stays within the limits assigned but sets no limit on the steps he introduces in ad lib fashion.
“Can’t dance to a routine very well,” he says. “It’s a lot like discipline. I think dancing should be free and easy and as you feel it.”
