EXPLOITATION 4-DAY ADVANCE TEASER CAMPAIGN Here are 4 teaser ads that sell your cast and title, for insertion the week preceding your opening, either one a day or all 4 on opening day. All on one mat. Bank Tie-Up Suggests Way To Sell Title Locally Warners’ Educational Department comes through with another “first” in its special “To Have And Have Not” promotion tie-up with the Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank. The tie-up suggests an excellent way for you to spike your own local campaign. Here’s the idea and the way it worked for the New York opening: The Bank’s monthly institutional publication, a 10-page booklet entitled “The American Way.” carries, as its main feature in the January issue, an article called “To Have And Have Not” by Humphrey Bogart. The piece stresses the value of and the necessity for saving, buying bonds, etc., at this time. It also features a still of Bogart and a scene from the film. 50,000 copies of “The American Way” are printed monthly and are distributed by direct mail to the bank’s list as well as to various key executives. This covers all of the bank’s many branches. Similar tie-ups with banks throughout the country should be arranged locally with credits to your own playdate. PICTURE FEATURE FOR NEWSPAPERS An interesting 4-still photo layout which features Bogart, Bacall, Brennan and Hoagy Carmichael is made available with captions for general newspaper use. The stills—all informal shots (not reproduced elsewhere in this pressbook) — will make an excellent feature for your local editor. POPULAR BOOK EDITION AVAILABLE Grosset & Dunlap, book publishers, are making available to bookstores a new printing of their popular priced edition of Ernest Hemingway's novel, “To Have And Have Not,” from which the film was adapted. The book sells for $1. (See illustration on opposite page.) Starring HUMPHREY BOGART with Walter Brennan, Lauren Bacall and Hoagy Carmichael & Superlative melodrama is the key to Warner Bros.’ powerful film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s “To Have And Have Not,” a Howard Hawks production, now playing at the . .. . Theatre. Starring Humphrey Bogart as a freedom loving, danger baiting soldier of fortune and introducing a new and exciting personality in Lauren Bacall, the film gallops along at breathtaking speed, artfully combining torrid romance and pulsating action. In the sun-baked, Caribbean lecale of Martinique, the screen tale presents a crystal-clear portrait of political haves and NO SSRIS: have-nots under corrupt Vichy control, Featured also are Walter Brennan and_ songwriter Hoagy Carmichael, who makes a topnotch acting bow. “Frenchy” (Marcel Dalio) asks help for his Free French pals but Morgan (Humphrey Bogart), skipper of a power boat, is determined to stay clear of politics. Marie (Lauren Bacall) looks on. Morgan finally agrees to the use of his boat in order to get funds to send Marie home. In love with Morgan, the girl stays, sings at Frenchy’s cafe, where “Cricket’’ (Hoagy Carmichael), plays piano. A brush with Vichy police wounds the Free French fugitive (Walter Molnar) and Morgan is forced to remove the bullet in an underground hide-out. Vichy police chief Renard (Dan Seymour ) tells Bogart his rummy charge, Eddie (Walter Brennan), is held hostage. Infuriated, Morgan effects an escape, knows now which side he’s on.
