STORY
In_ order to crush. an uprising of guerilla warfare in the midwest in 1864, President Lincoln (Robert Barrat), sends Lieut. Rod Co!ton, (Dick Foran), a young Army lieutenant to Kent City as a secret service operative.
Several weeks later, as he nears Kent City, Rod rides up to a stagecoach holdup. He shoots at the two gunmen, but they escape, and Rod escorts the stage into the town. Lucy Blake (Paula Stone) is a passenger in the stage; and Rod falls in love with her at first sight.
That night, in his hotel room, Rod is slugged and robbed of his secret service credentials. He decides to call himself “John Madison” and secure a job somewhere in town. He gets his chance at a gambling house run by Curley Thorne (Addison Richards). Here he is disappointed to find Lucy working as a dancing girl and obviously favored by Thorne.
In the meantime the man who had slugged Rod and _ taken his papers, a guerilla fighter named Hawk (Henry Otho), has given the papers to his chief, Jefferson Duane (Gordon Elliott). Diuane takes the papers to Colonel Douglas (Joseph Crehan), commandant of the fort. He tells the officer that he has been appointed a member of Lincoln’s secret service, and asks for secret information about future shipments of gold to Washington.
Rod, at the gambling house, has made friends with Happy (Eddie Shubert). The two overhear Thorne, in his private office with Duane, discuss plans for holding up the gold shipment which is to be sent the following week. The next day Rod is discharged after he has beaten up
Thorne who had attempted to molest Lucy.
On the night of the holdup Rod and Happy catch Hawk as he is about to get away with the gold shipment. As they prepare to take him back to town a band of soldiers ride up and arrest them as accomplices. Lucy, also a secret service agent, has told Co'onel Douglas that she suspects Rod of being in with the outlaw gang. Hawk escapes as they are led back to town.
Being unable to present proper credentials, Rod is sentenced to be shot. On the night of an uprising by guerillas, Happy helps him to escape. They save the day for the soldiers by a clever trick directed against Duane, Thorne and_ their henchmen. Rod makes Duane confess to Colonel Douglas that he stole the credentials, and is an imposter and the leader of the guerillas.
Rod and Lucy report back to Washington and to President Lincoln. The famous American statesman presents Rod with a Major’s commission. Rod and Lucy are married with full army honors.
