Jury Carefully Selected For Big Trial Scene in Constance Bennett Opus
Picking the jury for the final court room sequence in the Constance Bennett picture, ‘‘Two Against the World,’’ by Warner Bros., which is now showing at the theatre, was said to be almost as exacting a job as selecting one for a murder trial in real life.
Many motion picture fans have done jury duty and consequently are familiar with the teehnique, which means that a picture jury must be above criticism. In this picture es pecial care had to be taken as each member has a small bit part in ques tioning the witness, Miss Bennett.
Archie Mayo, the director, chose the members one by one, much as a real jury is selected, picking out actors who had had actual court service.
‘‘Two Against the World,’’ taken from the novel by Marion Dix and Jerry Horwin, is realistie and dramatic in the extreme. It gives Miss Bennett a chance to display her rare emotional ability in the court room seenes, where she confesses to indis eretions of which she is not guilty in order to save her brother from death for murder and her married sister from a domestie seandal.

Neil Hamilton Couldn’t Make Love to Bennett Because of. Injured Ribs
Love scenes between Constance Bennett and Neil Hamilton in Warner Bros.’ picture, ‘‘Two Against The World,’’ now at the ... .... Theatre, had to be postponed to the final week of production due to the fact that Hamilton discovered he had four cracked and dislocated ribs.
Scenes for another picture in which he was required to ride a polo pony caused the mishap. The pony was one which is popularly described as being able to turn on a dime. Hamilton is used to bigger change. On a halfdollar, he says, he might have stuck to the horse. As it was, he went off on a tangent and landed—of all places—on the four ribs.
The actor returned to work in the Bennett picture the following day and worked regularly in party scenes, court room sequences and interior and exterior ‘‘takes,’’ but at his suggestion the ardent love seenes which appear in the picture were reserved for the final week when his injuries had healed and he was able to hold a lady in his arms without suffering pain,

Has Unusual Theme
‘Two Against the World,’’ a War
ner Bros. production, starring Con
stance Bennett, now at the theatre carries one of the most unique themes ever presented in either
story or picture form.
The climax of the plot comes in a smashing courtroom sequence in which the heroine’s brother is on trial for murder. The girl, played by Miss Bennett, is confronted by the choice of keeping silent and letting her bro ther pay the penalty of murder, or of taking the blame for the guilt of her married sister who is too cowardly to confess her indiscretions with an
other man.
The girl makes the sacrifice of her own honor in the presence of the man she loves, destroying as she believes all her hope for happiness. Miss Bennett rises to the terrific emotion of the scene with a dramatic expression of feeling in what is said to be her finest screen portrayal.
She is supported by a cast of noted players including Neil Hamilton, Helen Vinson, Gavin Gordon, Allen Vincent, Walter Walker, Roscoe Karns, “'an Mowbray and Hale Hamilton.

The man was afraid of offending the star and merely pushed her gently. Nothing Archie Mayo, the director, said could induce him to push Miss Bennett hard enough to satisfy the director. Finally she spoke to him herself. ‘‘ Rush against me as though you were running for a train,’’ she said. When the scene was next tried the man hit her so iard he knocked her off her feet. He was all contrition in a minute, but when Miss Bennett got her breath back she told him his work was splendid.

The studio scenes are usually taken from nine a. m. to five p. m., unless there is some particular haste in which the time is increased. Miss Bennett wanted to be home in time to take a rest before dressing for dinner, so she insisted on pushing the clock up three quarters of an hour. Consequently the entire cast started to work at 8:15 and quit three quarters of an hour early, if they were lucky,

3 Orders of Baked Beans For Constance Bennett
Constance Bennett’s justly famed appetite for plain and substantial food serves her in good stead in her latest Warner Bros. production, ‘‘ Two Against the World,’’ which comes to the theatre on ‘ Three times during the picture she and her leading man, Neil Hamilton, are called upon to eat quantities of pork and beans. It was necessary to go through with the actual consumption of the food as the picture is laid in Boston and the sequences have a particular bearing on the plot. Miss Bennett declares she really is quite fond of beans, only she prefers ordinarily to take them in smaller doses.

Finally he decided to give them a daneing lesson. He clasped Miss Bennett in his arms and whirled her about the floor noiselessly, at the same time conversing in an ordinary tone of voice which could be heard all over the set. This is somewhat remarkable since Mr. Mayo tips the scales at three hundred pounds. But the dancers took the tip and danced silently for the next ‘‘take.’’
