ESSENTIAL — INFORMATION THIS 1S EL HE STORY ce: for Puntication) Prince Henry (Dennis Morgan), Balkan potentate visiting in America, decides to take twenty-four hours leave from being himself, to find out what Americans really are like. He eludes his aide, Count Oswald (S. Z. Sakall) and strikes up an acquaintance with a cab driver, Buzz (Jack Carson). To conceal his identity, Henry says he is from Milwaukee. ‘Me, too," says the ungrammatical Buzz and the two become immediate friends. They go to Happy's Hash House for refreshment and wind up with too many “boiler-makers."' Intoxicated, they appear finally at the Flatbush home of Buzz's sister, Nan (Rosemary DeCamp) and her eight-year-old daughter, Peggy (Patti Brady). Next morning, Nan and Buzz identify Henry as the missing Prince pictured on the front page of the paper. To avoid being recognized by the police, Henry decides to shave his mustache. At the barber shop, Buzz introduces Henry to his girl, Connie (Joan Leslie) a manicurist, and her girl friend Polly (Janis Paige). At Buzz's suggestion, Connie and Henry spend a day together taking in the New York sights and a mutual attraction grows between them. That evening, at the apartment of Connie and Polly, FBI agents, who had been tracing the Prince's trail since his disappearance from the train, finally catch up with their quarry. Later Henry is scheduled to make a radio address to the people of his country on the eve of their plebescite to decide between a republic and a monarchy. In the radio studio, unaware that they are already on the air, Henry and Buzz discuss the blessings of American democracy. Buzz becomes a national hero. A cablegram arrives with the results of the plebescite. Prince Henry is delighted to learn that his country has voted to become a republic. Now he can live like a human being. Buzz, Henry and Connie take a wild ride in Buzz's cab to decide who shall marry whom. The cab gets into an accident and Connie, injured, is rushed to a doctor's office. When she regains consciousness, Connie relates her dream to the doctor, who decides, psychoanalytically, which one of the two suitors she really loves. In the meantime, Henry and Oswald are at the airport, preparing to board a plane for the middle west, where Henry has been offered a job with a beer company. As they are about to get aboard, Connie arrives with Buzz. She goes into a long embrace with Henry — and tells him that she and Buzz will be waiting to greet him when he comes back. Henry climbs sadly into the plane and seats himself beside a beautiful girl. She is Lauren Becall, Henry's suppressed desire. But before he can introduce himself, Humphrey Bogart taps him menacingly on the shoulder. Henry changes his seat as the plane takes off.
