4 BEFORE YOU DO A THING READ THIS PAGE THE STORY Before John Allen enters the death chamber, the doctor explains that it takes about two seconds for a man to review his whole life while in the electric chair, John sits in the chair, visualizing his life as the dynamos hum. The drone dissolves into the buzz of a riveting machine. We see John and hig pal, Bud, working on the girders of a huge skyscraper. John is serious-minded and not very enthusiastic when Bud arranges a “blind date” for him. The two men wait for Bud’s girl and the “blind date” but when John discovers she is a girl he had met before and dislikes, he escapes and runs into a dance hall. Here a slick taxi dancer picks him up and John is smitten with her. Bud warns him, but John will not listen. One evening she persuades him to drink. John becomes intoxicated. In his muddled condition, the girl takes him to a justice of the peace and ‘they are married. John gsobers up and decides to stick it out. is afraid to climb the girders. His wife finally succeeds in persuading him to return, telling him it was not. his fault. He rushes to the skyscraper and climbs a girder to test himself. He has a vision of Bud hurtling through the air, becomes dizzy and falls, landing on a scaffold a floor below and injuring his hip. Because of his mental state, his recovery is very slow and his wife supports him. He never realizes where the money is coming from until Shirley coolly tells him it comes from Tony. Crazed with anger, John, helpless, manages to hide a few dollars and plays the horses. With his winnings, he pays off the debts to the landlady and in the frenzy of a madman gets out of his chair and walks for the first time in months. He goes to the dance hall where he finds his wife with Tony. He pays Tony back the money he had given his wife, and then kills Shirley. John, angered, refuses to believe him, He picks up a pair of tongs and starts for Bud, who loses his balance and falls to his death. John broods over this. His nerves are so shaken that he the verdict—his mad belief being that it was no crime to kill Shirley. He is trying to explain this to the judge when he becomes dizzy—he sees Bud falling—everything goes into a whirl—and again the sound of the dynamos is heard. The warden speaks to the doctor, which breaks the terrific tension of the witnesses as the picture fades out.
