Manager ........:... ar thee. 6 ns Theatre anNOUNCES ...........00-next as the opening date for “Under Eighteen,” the Warner Bros. and Vitaphone production which is the first starring vehicle for seventeen-year-old Marian Marsh, most notable screen discovery of the year.
Miss Marsh, who is known wherever pictures are shown, was a Los Angeles schoolgirl less than twelve months ago. An older sister brought her to the studios for a test which proved satisfactory. Nothing exciting happened, however, until John Barrymore, then looking for a leading lady for his “Svengali,” chose the tiny blonde from the host of applicants, to play the role of Trilby.
Marian’s intelligent portrayal of the difficult part resulted in her swift appearance in a like capacity with Edward G. Robinson in “Five Star Final”—with William Powell in “The Road to Singapore” and again with Mr. Barrymore in “The Mad Genius.” It was the praise of these eminent stars, added to the approval of press and public, which made the producers decide to elevate her to stardom without further delay.
Miss Marsh’s portrayal of the poor little girl who tries with misguided enthusiasm to lift herself into the society of the idle rich, amply fulfills the promise of her earlier performances. The wistful, heroine of “Under Eighteen” wins and holds the heart of everybody, and her startling adventures are followed with keen interest. The cast includes many screen favorites. The romantic lead is played by Regis Toomey, recently seen in “The Finger Points.” Warren William, Broadway stage favorite, seen not long ago on the screen in “Expensive Women” and “Honor of the Family” depicts a wealthy playboy with suave finesse.
