ORY OF MARRIAGE” | THE STORY | Lola Davis, a private secretary, and Ken Hays are very much in love. Ken’s salary is little more than Lola’s—not enough to marry on, as he wants his wife to stay home and keep house. He gets an offer to go to South America, but Lola is afraid he will forget her and persuades him to give it up. They decide to marry. He consents to her working after they are married until his salary is bigger. His department is disbanded and he is forced to work at a smaller salary. Lola gets a raise, making her salary larger than her husband’s. Ken is disgruntled but they get along until he tires of dirty dishes and delicatessen fare and the fact that his wife earns more than he. He travels with a fast crowd and gets caught with another girl in a speakeasy raid. Lola bails him and forgives him, but Ken loses his job. Lola is offered a chance to go to St. Louis at an increased salary. She intends to turn down the offer until she learns Ken has been discharged. She urges him to go with her. Ken revolts, declaring he will not live on a woman’s salary any longer. Lola takes the new position but can’t forget Ken. In St. Louis, Peter Acton, a wealthy man she had known in New York, makes ardent love to her. Lola still loves Ken, though she has not heard from him in some time. One evening, when Lola is celebrating her birthday at a country club, she gets a wire telling her Ken is very ill. Acton sends her to New York in a plane and tells her he will be waiting if she consents to be his wife, realizing there is little hope. Lola finds Ken in a critical condition. Shirley, the girl with whom Ken had been arrested, is taking’ care of him. The doctor will not allow Lola to see Ken until the crisis is past. j Maes When she does get in to see him, Ken is cool to her. Lola now wants her husband back. She tells him she has been discharged and wants to stay with him. He is overjoyed. She says that from now on she is going to be a real wife, and Shirley, realizing she is no longer needed, bids them goodbye and walks out. [SCREEN RECORDS | LORETTA YOUNG ...
