Chana also has been a physical culturist and a skin-diver; she sails boats and rides horseback; is a polished dancer of classical ballet, a painter of promise and a deep student of philosophy and theology. Following his arrival at Everglades, Fla., where the Schulberg Production was made entirely on location, Renick was assigned to a room in the swank Rod and Gun Club, where Burl Ives, Christopher Plummer, Gypsy Rose Lee and other members of the cast lived. No sooner had Sammy started to open his bags then the ex-jockey heard a series of clicks, for which the telephone operator disclaimed all responsibility, Renick heard the clicking again and again and finally traced it to a small balcony outside his window. There he discovered that the noise came from a cage containing two ten-feet-long rattlesnakes. Racing out of the building, Sammy was stopped by director Nicholas Ray, who told him that Renick’s nextdoor neighbor was Brad Bradford, snake expert for the picture, who kept his venomous charges in their cage outside the window when they weren't before the cameras. If | played it, the director would probably expect me to diet for the youthful scenes,’ he explains.
