Sports Stores Tie-Ups Tie-up with every local sporting wear and equipment dealer in town. Secure special ‘‘ Winner Take All’’ window displays from them, using liberal quantities of stills and insert cards. Try to get them to come in with you on the ‘‘ Winner Take All’’ cooperative ads explained on these pages. Don’t limit the windows to men’s sports clothes and equipment, but give an equal, if. not greater, display to feminine apparel. _dilor Tie-up Several stills are available showing Cagney being measured for formal clothes, with the suits in an unfinished state and tailors taking care of him. Use the following copy in the windows: “Jimmy’s a knockout in ‘‘Winner Take All’’ at the Strand—You can be a knockout, too, if you wear Schmaltz’s Custom Tailored Clothes.’’ Loeal Fraternal Club Boxing Shows Tie up with your local Elks and other clubs for announcement space in advance of the picture. Gain the goodwill of all your local clubs by putting on an amateur boxing show for them at a central hall. The promotion of such bouts is simplified by your local fight man agers who want publicity for their boys. If licenses are needed in your state for professional bouts, make it an amateur show, with each club putting up its representatives. Be sure to see that ‘‘Winner Take All’’ gets plenty of billing at the clubs and in the papers when you have the sports editors announcing the inter-club bouts. If possible, tie in the idea of ‘‘ Winner Take All’’ by giving prizes only to bout winners, announcing beforehand that those are the conditions. Get as many women at the bouts as possible, having the announcer make known the fact that Jimmy Cagney is a bear in the ring and a caveman sweetheart. Lobby Stunt Arrange with your local sports goods merchant or department store for them to supply a demonstrator of their sports paraphernalia in your lobby. The attention the stunt will get and credit on a lobby card will compensate for the expense involved. Demonstrate things pertaining only to boxing. This can inelude bag punching, rope-skipping, pulleys and other muscle developers the dealer wishes to show. Ring And Love Get both sexes interested in your showing by putting in a combination fight and love lobby. Spot ring equipment around the lobby. Rig up a miniature ring, blowing up stills of the fight scenes for the ring. Hang an overhead light which will reproduce the atmosphere of the fight arena.. Use plenty of boxing equipment, such as bags, gloves, ete. Exhibit the trophies won by the local champions. Get a few good prints of champions such as John L. Sullivan, Bob Kitzsimmons, Jim Corbett, Jack Dempsey, et al., using them as a border for a large blow-up of Cagney. For the love angle, blow up photos of the alluring beauties in the picture in their scenes with Cagney. Use plenty of the society background. Pick up your catchlines from the ads and this section. Run them as large as possible. Use bright colors throughout. See that both ring and woman atmosphere get an equal break. Blonde-Tamed Pug Ballyhoo Dress up a husky bruiser in regular Park Avenue clothes, High hat, Cutaway, Striped Pants, Spats, Patent Leather Shoes, Cane and Carnation. See that his clothes are much too small for him, the hat resting on top of his head, ete. Have him lead a small lap-dog on a thick rope or eable leash, while a beautiful blonde aecompanies him. The girl is to hand heralds to everyone, while the man carries a banner on his back reading, ‘‘See how a blonde tamed Jimmy Cagney in ‘‘Winner Take All’’ at the Strand. It’s funnier than I look.’’ 7 CSS ote Trophy Exhibition Borrow medals, cups and ribbons from loeal boxing ehampions for display in local windows and in your lobby. See that your jeweler gives you a large display of the trophies donated in connection with the bouts you promote for clubs, etc., as suggested elsewhere in these pages. If possible, secure photos of the trophy winners for the window displays of their prizes. Boxing Show On Stage As an advance or current stunt, get a few of the prominent local boxing champions on the stage for exhibitions of boxing and training tactics, such as bag punching, rope skipping, weights, etc. If there is a bout coming up in the very near future, you should find it easier to tie up with the local fight managers, by giving them an announcement of the coming fight. In return for this eourtesy see that the local sports clubs give you a reciprocal announcement, posters, and cards. Boxing Bouts Programs Reach a ready-made audience for ‘‘ Winner Take All’’ by distributing programs at boxing bouts in advance of your showing or during the run. List the fighters on the programs and devote plenty of space to Cagney and the picture. The programs can be distributed at baseball games, cigar stores, restaurants, hotels, factories and _ other places where large numbers of men and women ean be reached. Lucky Number Stunt Give numbered stubs to kids attending your showings with prizes of boxing gloves and other sports equipment you have promoted for the winners. Have the drawing for the prizes at a matinee after your showing of ‘‘Winner Take All.’’ Announce the prizes and the lucky number stunt in advance of the showing in your newspaper ads and in your theatre. BLOW BY BLOW DESCRIPTION OF LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP BOUT “WINNER TAKE ALL” Mr, Exhibitor:—This blow by blow description of the big fight — . scene in ‘Winner Take All,” has been written as an exploitation -s-.vunt for the: picture which will attract a great deal of .attention . to your show. We suggest, if you are now wsing-the-rauto—ie— advertise your show, that you arrange to have this blow by blow description read over the air by your announcer, or by the sports editor of one of your local newspapers. If you are not buying time on the air, then we suggest that you tie-up with your local station. Offer them the copy as part of its sustaining program, either broadcasting direct from the theatre or read at the studio. We also suggest that you get your newspaper to give this broadcast space by using the paper’s sports editor, or a member of his department to act as the announcer. The description can also be used as a special sports feature in your newspaper the day after it has been broadcast. You’ve heard blow by blow descriptions over the air of boxing bouts, but I don’t think you ever heard a more exciting fight described than the one I’m about to cover for you. It is a blow by blow description of a fight which appears in “Winner Take All,” a Warner Bros. movie now playing at the ........... Theatre. James Cagney as Jimmie Kane is meeting Al West, the champion, for the Lightweight Championship of the World. The old Garden is jammed to the rafters with the biggest fight crowd it ever held—TI’ll let you listen to the announcer—“Ladies and gentlemen—the main event of the evening —15 rounds of boxing for the lightweight championship of the world. Introducing Al West, the champion—(crowd roars in approval)—“And the challenger, Jimmie Kane’”—(boos from the audience). The referee has just called the men to the center of the ring—he gives them instructions and sends them back to the corner with instructions to come out fighting—CLANG—there’s the bell —Pop Slavin (Guy Kibbee) Kane’s manager whispers a last minute instruction into his fighter’s ear and sends him out with a slap on the back—the champion comes out with a rush and lets fly a left hook—but Kane gets away from it —the champ is crowding Jimmie, swinging lefts a rights to his head and body, but Jimmie keeps backing out of range —he stops long enough to shoot a hard right to the champ’s jaw which drops the champ to his knees, but he is up without waiting for a count—he resumes his crowding, but the challenger keeps backing away—Gene Tunney never did any faster back stepping than what the challenger is doing—the crowd is starting to jeer Kane by asking him— ‘“‘Where’s your bicycle’’-—Ah, the champ has cornered Kane—Kane tries to fight his way out, but is dropped with a short right to the jaw—he’s up at once and swinging wildly with the champion as the bell rings for the end of the round. There appears to be lots of excitement in Kane’s corner — his trainer, Rosebud, is talking excitedly to Kane, who seems to be worried about some ’ thing—he looks at the clock and then at an empty ringside seat where _ his society blonde is supposed to sit—Kane seems sore about something—CLANG— there goes the bell for the next round. Kane is half way across the ring before the champ is off his stool—he lands vicious lefts and rights to the champ’s head and the champ fights back toe to toe with him. Blows are going over so fast it’s impossible to keep track of them—no attempt is being made to avoid the blows—Kane shifts to the body with a hard right and as West’s guard drops, Kane hooks him with a smashing left hcok followed by a beautiful right cross—the champ is down—the place is in an uproar, but the champ spurns a count and is up in a flash, mixing with the challenger — Kane drops the champ again with a beautiful one-two —this time he’s taking a count—onetwo-three-four—he’s up and Kane steps in for the finisher, but West manages to fall into a clinch and holds on until his head clears a bit—oh, he’s a champ all right — he’s mixing again — Kane shoots a hard right to his body, but West crosses his right and drops Kane flat on his back — Kane rolls over — doesn’t wait for the count, but gets up and tears in again. They are mixing furiously in the center of the ring as the bell rings for the end of the round—WHEW! But that was an exciting round — the fans are still on their feet with excitement. Kane keeps looking at the clock—he must have a date and is afraid he’s going to be too late—he’s sitting on the edge of his stool waiting for the bell—CLANG there it goes and Kane ‘comes out swinging—the champ is ready for him this time and they meet in the center of the ring amid a flurry of gloves— Kane lands a hard left on West's chin, but takes two blows to the head in return—there’s no science here—they’re still swinging away toe to toe— doesn’t seem possible for human beings to go along at that terrific clip—he’s down —the champ | mean, from a right cross to the whiskers—he'’s taking a count, 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8he’s up. Kane who kept watching the clock while the count was on, rushes in again—he’s over-anxious and it looks as though the champ is going to get away from him long enough to steady himself — nope — Kane's a fighting fool tonight—he’s ontop cf his man all the time—The champ’s gamely fighting back, but another hard right finally lands on the button and he’s own again—Kane’s in a neutral corner with one eye on the clock — 7-8-9, West is up again—this Kane sets himself and lets go a r Sattens West—He tries to get ae quite make it and champion—he doesr if you want to see two fisted, hard hi a chump for a be sure to see CH6.2g ee
