Lil Dagover Transcends European Triumph In Her First American Picture “‘The Woman From Monte Carlo”’
Lil Dagover, the lovely lady from over-seas who is so unlike all the other lovely ladies who come to us from over-seas — came yesterday to the..:...... Theatre —was seen by local drama enthusiasts—and without exception, conquered them—not alone by her exceptional acting, but by that universal language which has nothing whatever to do with time, place or nationality.
Lil Dagover is a creature of ever-changing lights and shadows. Slight, rather small, willowy, with unfathomable dark eyes—she is, by turns, wistful, gay, tantalizing, tragic, childlike. The continental charmer, the siren, may be the part she plays—but one is always aware of the real woman — who understands people and_ likes them.
Miss Dagover makes of the role of Lottie Corlaix, butterfly wife of the stern captain, a person to be pitied even when blamed — a character of many moods, but all so adorably feminine and of such potential fineness, that her final renunciation for the sake of the man she has wronged, seems inevitable. No more satisfying part
could have been chosen by the producers to introduce the superb artistry of the star.
The supporting cast is headed by those consummate actors, Walter Huston and Warren William. Mr. Huston plays the part of Captain Corlaix, commander of a battle cruiser, whose duties make him neglect his wife. Mr. William por

Others in the large cast are
George E. Michael Curtiz in his direction misses no opportunity to create beauty and action from the situations and characters in the thrilling drama. The photography is unusual and the settings effective. All is splendidly dominated by the

Lil Dagover, now drawing erowds to the........... Theatre, where she is starring in ‘‘The Woman From Monte Carlo,’’ her first American-made picture — when asked whether she had the usual obstacles to overcome on her road to fame, replied ‘‘ Always I have been very lucky!’’ and rapped the wooden arm of her chair three times, sharply. ‘‘ Yet you knock wood, Miss Dagover!”’
‘“Well, there have been hard times—not worth mentioning. In Europe I am known as a quite good sportswoman—I fence, ride, swim, play tennis, you understand —and my first pictures were what you eall ‘sensation.’ I have leaped from bridges and burning houses —climbed mountains—rode racing motors. . think I am acting and let me go down the second time. Once I am thrown from a trick horse and lie in the hospital nine months. In one of my films I have a huge python coiled about my waist— but pouf! It is past. I am here— happy!’’ Again the little lady knocked wood, and laughed.

Spouse
Dagover, the exotic European OCLTESS, “NOW at The se ari Theatre in ‘‘The Woman From Monte Carlo’’ says she is glad her parents were unusual enough to christen her ‘Lilith.’ a name to be reckoned with in this world.

Though Dagover has shortened the name to Lil, to better suit her changing moods of extreme elation and depression, she is an earnest student of the occult, and sets real store by her unusual cognomen. ‘“‘Yes,’’ Dagover says with a smile ‘‘Lilith was a _ very naughty woman — but misunderstood. Adam, maybe he was to blame a little, too. Anyhow, all he did. was to stay at home and tend the Garden. Lilith had the courage to go out and see the world! I am not sorry to be named Lilith !”’

Dark Forest Of Many Lands Knew Dagover In Her
Childhood
The strange other-worldliness which at times shines through the sophisticated worldliness of the characterizations of ~ Dagover
NOW at the? Theatr: in ‘‘The Woman From Monte Carlo’’ her first American picture, is no doubt owing to the days spent in forests of the old world in her childhood, while traveling with her father, who was a_ head forester.
