STORY (Not for publication) Jeeper Smith (Jimmy Durante) and Breezy Jones (Phil Silvers) ace selling team for Whirlaway Vacuum Cleaners, attempt to sell their wares at an army recruiting office. In their enthusiasm, they sign various papers and before they know what it's all about, they are in the army. The division to which they are assigned is a cavalry unit which is being mechanized, much to the disgust of Colonel Dobson (Donald McBride). Colonel Dobson believes the horse is mightier than the tank, but his daughter Bliss (Jane Wyman) and her fiance Captain Radcliff (Regis Toomey), who is in charge of the mechanization work, don't agree with him. Anxious to help Bliss’ romance, Jeeper and Breezy go to work on the Colonel. First Jeeper disguises himself as a test pilot for a new tank, takes the Colonel for a wild ride. The Colonel hates tanks worse than ever when the ride is over, but the boys are not daunted in their efforts. Their motto is “try try again," and their methods are riotous. Finally fate plays into their hands, and they succeed in getting their point across to the Colonel, and there's a happy and hilarious ending for all. (Running time—79 minutes) ‘You're In The Army Now’ Brings Regiment of Roars to Strand Comedy Trio Heads Cast of Friday’s Film A new comedy team which promises to make laugh history will be introduced to local film audiences when Warner Bros. newest comedy, “You’re In The Army Now,” starts Friday at the Strand Theatre. Jimmy Durante, whose classic antics have kept movie, stage and radio audiences in the proverbial stitches for a decade or more, and Phil Silvers, straight-faced comedian of stage and recent movie fame, make up the new team. Completing the trio of stars is Jane Wyman. The Navy Blues Sextette those glamorous Hollywood beauties, have deserted Uncle Sam’s first line of defense, to join Durante and Silvers in whooping things up for the boys in camp. The lithesome lovelies are featured, appropriately, in the musical scenes of the film, with Matty Malneck and his orchestra providing the accompaniment. “You’re In The Army Now” tells the hapless adventures that befall Durante and_ Silvers, who, as the ace salesmen for the Whirlaway Vacuum Cleaner Co., attempt to sell a vacuum cleaner to a recruiting sergeant. In their enthusiasm they sign all the papers he puts in front of them, and shortly the army has two new and very bewildered privates. From then on, the fun comes fast and furiously, with Durante and Silvers fitting as neatly into army life as two square pegs into two round holes. A new colonel is assigned to their camp, a cavalryman who detests all kinds of machinery, and is furious when he learns that his division Mat 202—30c TWO ROOKIES AND A COOKIE—Phil Silvers and Jimmy Durante join the army and Jane Wyman as the colonel's daughter welcomes the new recruits. His pretty daughter is in love with the young officer who has been sent from Washington to bring about the mechanization, and the colonel has forbidden them to see each other. The boys, being all on the side of true love, pitch in with enthusiastic but misplaced zeal to convince the colonel that tanks are really superior to horses. For a starter, Durante masquerades as a test pilot ‘for a new kind of tank and takes the officer for a ride that neither of them—nor the audience—will ever forget. Other details of the Navy Blues Sextette In New Army Comedy Next on the list of the Strand Theatre’s new season attractions is “You’re In The Army Now,” Warner Bros. new rookie comedy, starring Jimmy: Durante, Phil Silvers and Jane Wyman, with a supporting cast that includes Regis Toomey, Donald McBride, and many other wellknown players. Also featured is that sixsome of Hollywood beauties, the Navy Blues Sextette, who have recently. completed a personal appearance tour around the country with the picture, “Navy Blues.” Matty Malneck’s orchestra provides the music for them. Lewis Seiler directed the production, from an original screen play which was written by Paul Gerard Smith and George Beatty. Mat 103—15c HE'S WHACKY IN KHAKI! Maddest, and said to be the most hilarious, of all the episodes in the story is when Durante has to masquerade as a girl Apache dancer in order to escape the consequences of one of his escapades. In the end, the colonel does a rightabout-face and the story ends on a neat surprise twist. “You’re In The Army Now” was directed by Lewis Seiler, from the script by Paul Gerard Smith and George Beatty. Durante, Silvers, Wyman Star In Rookie Comedy The lighter side of army life is the subject of the Strand’s next attraction, “You’re In The Army Now,” which opens on Fri-" day with the trio of Jimmy Durante, Phil Silvers and Jane Wyman heading a regiment of roars. Also featured in the comedy’s cast are Regis Toomey, Donald McBride, Joseph Sawyer, Clarence Kolb, as well the Navy Blues Sextette, and Matty Malneck’s orchestra. “You’re In The Army Now” takes rookies Durante and Silvers over the rocks in uproarious fashion. It seems the recruiting sergeant was just minding his own business when along come these two vacuum cleaner salesmen who try to high pressure him into buying their wares. But the sergeant proves to be a better salesman than they, and little knowing what he is letting the army in for, he signs them up. The unit to which they’re assigned is a cavalry unit which is being mechanized. The boys fall in whole-heartedly with a plot to convince their die-hard colonel that tanks are more efficient than horses. Not that they really think so, but simply because they want to help along the romance of the colonel’s pretty daughter. She’s in love with the young officer who is assigned to the job of mechanizing the unit, and papa is so mad over the whole thing that the young people don’t stand a chance without some outside assistance. With Durante and Silvers at the helm, the plot proceeds at a merry pace with laugh following laugh with the rapidity of machine gun fire. An army camp show works smoothly into the story and introduces .some .eye-filling. and tuneful moments, with Jane Wyman and the sextette of luscious lovelies singing and dancing to the Malneck orchestra. “You’re In The Army Now” was directed by Lewis Seiler from and original screen play by Paul Gerard Smith and George Beatty. ro PHOTO FEATURE SLANTED FOR COMEDY Here’s a picture layout that sells the timely gag angles!
