Golden SOME thirty-five members of the Projection Advisory Council journeyed over to Washington on June 6th to do honor to Nat Golden, assistant chief of the motion picture division of the United States Department of Commerce. A gold medal suitably inscribed was presented to Golden on the steps of the Capitol, Senator Walsh of Massachusetts making the presentation on behalf of the Projection Advisory Council. The following is a copy of the resolution read by Senator Walsh during the awarding of the medal. Whereas, Nathan D. Golden, for many years a member of Cleveland Local No. 160 having suffered from severe wounds while in the service of our country during the World War which wounds resulted in the loss of a leg, and Wheeeas, Nathan D. Golden, still an honored member of Cleveland Local No. 160 through his own ability, determination and courage has risen to a position of importance and responsibility as assistant chief, motion picture division, Department of Commerce, thereby rendering a real service to the entire motion picture industry and reflecting credit on his fellow projectionists, and Whereas, he has been of inestimable service to the Projection Advisory By James R. Cameron Council since its inception, giving advice, encouragement and assistance to the organization, Resolved, that his work is deserving of recognition as part of the plan and purpose of the Projection Advisory Council "to suitably recognize any work for the advancement of projection or an act of meritorious nature performed by a projectionist," and that an appropriate testimonial be given by the Projection Advisory Council as a tangible evidence of his sacrifices and accomplishments. Among those present were Senator Walsh, Hon. Wm. P. Connery, Jr., Arthur Dickinson of Will Hays' office ; C. Francis Jenkins, founder of the Society of Motion Picture Engineers ; S. North, Chief of the Motion Picture Division of the United States Department of Commerce ; .George Edwards, American Projection Society ; William Fitzgerald, secretary of Washington Chamber of Commerce ; William C. Kunzmann, National Carbon Co. ; Don McRae, McAuley Manufacturing Co. ; Joe Cifre, Harry Blumberg, N. C. Haefele, Roy Langford and Morris Rothenberg all of the National Theatre Supply Co. ; L. Kravitz, of the New York Local of the American Projection Society, who represented Sam Kaplan ; Victor Welman, Cleveland Local No. 160 (Golden's Local), Stanley Sumner and Charles Parshley of Cambridge, Mass. ; Karl W. Fasold of Pathe Sound News ; Don McNicol of Projection Engineering, Herb Griffin and P. A. McGuire of International Projection Corp. (McGuire represented Thad Barrows, president of the Council who was unable to attend due to his leaving for the west coast) ; Lewis Townsend of Rochester; John F. Rider of New York City ; James Finn, New York City ; Joe Robin of Roth Bros. ; Rudy Miehling, of Universal Sound, and several others. A sound motion picture was made of Senator Walsh's address and the presentation. This picture is to be shown to Senator Walsh and Nat Golden and an invited audience in Washington. A print of the picture is being sent to Thad Barrows on the west coast who is to make arrangements for its showing to the west coast members of the Council in Hollywood, the week of June 2nd. The Projection Advisory Council will be pleased to loan this picture to any local who cares to show it to their members. Requests for same should be made to either P. A. McGuire or to James R. Cameron, Manhattan Beach, N. Y. The arrangements for the presentation were made by James R. Cameron and P. A. McGuire. THAD BARROWS, PRESIDENT OF P. A. C, LEAVES FOR HOLLYWOOD THAD BARROWS of the Projection Advisory Council is on his way to Hollywood, California, to preside over the first west coast meeting of the Council. It is expected that some two hundred members and guests will attend the meeting to be held during the week of June 2nd. Lawrence Jones the secretary of the Council is now on the high seas on his way to London, England, to arrange for an exchange of ideas between the United States members and their English cousins. The membership of the Council has within the past two months grown beyond all expectation. Applications for membership have been received from all parts of the country and many from foreign lands. Some twenty-eight applications were handed to President Barrows during the Third District I.A.T.S.E. convention held in New Haven, Conn. A drive for increased membership is now under way, and it has been proposed to leave the books open to new applicants until September, when certain THAD BARROWS. changes may be put into effect. Applications for membership may be sent to Thad Barrows, Metropolitan Theatre, Boston. Mass., or to P. A. McGuire, International Projector Corpo ration, 90 Gold Street, New York City. The following is a list of chairmen of the various committees for the forthcoming year — Will C. Smith, Charles E. Lewis, P. A. McGuire, F. H. Richardson, Joe Cifre, Otto Kafka, Benjamin Stern, Thomas A. Reed, H. E. Stein, M. D. O'Brien, James Finn, George C. Edwards, Russell H. McCullough, Harry Sherman, Harry Rubin and James R. Cameron. ▲ MOVE TO FORM CHICAGO SECTION OF S.M.P.E. A Chicago section of the Society of Motion Picture Engineers is to be formed soon. An informal dinner and meeting was held in Chicago on April 17th, by Chicago members of the Society, at which time 26 members drew up a petition asking the board of governors for authority to organize the section. Each of the 26 members is pledged to bring in one new member in the near future, thus assuring a large and successful Section. At the meeting J. A. Dubray of Bell & Howell Company was elected temporary chairman and J. E. Jenkins temporary secretary.
