The Jewess
THE TWO operas you are to this week from KYW similar in outline and are both written and sung in Italian. The plot of the Jewess is laid in during: the Middle Rachel, the Jewess, has been kidnapped and adopted by Eleazar, the Jew. although she Uy the daughter of Cardinal Francesco di Brogni. Prince Leopold, who is engaged to the Princess Eudosia, carries on a clandestine love affair with Rachel disguised as a Jew. While he is in the little jewelryshop, Princess Eudosia conies to buy her lover a chain. This touches the false heart of the prince and he returns to her. However. Rachel and her father deliver the chain and see the prince. Rachel denounces him and both are condemned to die, because it is against the law for a Jew to marry a Christian. Touched by the pleading of Princess Eudosia, Rachel withdraws her charge. The prince's life is saved but the two Jews must die unless they will turn Christian, because they have conspired against the life of a Christian. As Rachel leaps into the seething cauldron of oil, Eleazar tells the Cardinal that she is his lost daughter. The opera ends with Eleazar alsto leaping into the cauldron and the Cardinal prostrate with the thought of the death to which he has condemned his own child.
// Trovatore
IL TROVATORE is also built around the kidnapping of a child of noble birth, but this time Azucena, a gypsy, steals Manrico, the son of a Duke. Manrico falls in love with Leonora, a noble lady of Aragon, who also has for a suitor Count di Luna, the brother of Manrico. Not knowing their relationship both come to serenade the same lady and fight a jealous duel, in which Manrico is wounded. While Manrico is recovering from his wounds, Leonora thinking that her lover is dead, decides to take the veil. The Count plans to kidnap her before she enters the convent. Manrico and his followers prevent this but are in the end beaten by the Count who throws Manrico and his mother into prison. The prison songs of this opera are very famous. Leonora promises to marry the Count if he will free Manrico. While the Count is rejoicing over his promised happiness Leonora takes this news to her lover and dies in his arms. The Count in his anger has Manrico executed at once. As the Count stands in the palace, looking down into the courtyard, the old gypsy tells him he has killed his own brother.
