THE people who read Radio and Television Daily throughout the year do not need to be told about the work of The Advertising Council. Radio and Television Daily reports to them regularly and frequently the generous time, effort and energy that broadcasters, advertisers, performers and persons in all phases of advertising contribute to The Advertising Council's campaigns in the public interest. However, it might be encouraging to all those who participate in public service campaigns at one time or another during the year to see before them, in this Annual, the impressive roster of national public service projects and events that broadcasters and advertisers assist so effectively in a 12-month period. '^^^^ I think broadcasters and advertisers should feel proud of the many areas in which they work so hard and so faithfully to help solve national problems by voluntary public action. Let me list these national efforts that are helped so forcefully: American Economic System, American Education Week, American Heart Month, American Heritage Foundation, American-Korean Foundation Drive, American Red Cross, Armed Forces Day, Arthritis & Rheumatism Drive, Better Schools, Big Brother Week, Boy Scout Week, Boys Club Week, Brotherhood Week, Canada Day, Cancer Control Month, CARE, Cerebral Palsy Drive, Child Health Day, Child Safety, Civil Defense, Community Chest. Also Crusade For Freedom, Diabetes Week, Easter Seals Appeal, Employ The Physically Handicapped Week, Engineers Wanted. 4-H Achievement Day, FaiTTi Safety Week, File Income Tax Returns Early, Fire Prevention, Flag Week & Flag Day, Freedom Foundation Awards Program, Girl Scouts Birthday; Girl Scout Week, Girls Club Week, Ground Observer Corps, Home Demonstration Week, Home Gardening and Food Preservation, Hospital Day, Jr. Red Cross Annual Enrollment, Letters From America Week, Mail Call, Mail Early For Xmas, March of Dimes. Also Mental Health Week, National Blood Program, National Defense Week, National Guard Recruiting, National Hearing Week, National YMCA Week, Needlework Guild, Prevent Forest Fires, Religion In American Life, Salvation Army Xmas Appeal, Sight Saving Month, Social Security For The Selfemployed, Stop Accidents, Student Nurse Recruiting, TB Xmas Seal Sale, United Defense Fund, United Nations Day, United Negro College Fund, U. S. Savings Bonds, and YWCA Week. Also, I believe that broadcasters and advertisers should feel a sense of pride in scanning such quick statistics as the following figures that the Council pulled together at the end of 1953: In 1953, advertisers and broadcasters, through the Council's Radio and Television Allocation Plans alone, contributed major national coverage to 17 different top-priority campaigns and gave additional support to 39 other causes. The circulation contributed to these campaigns — by commercial network programs alone — was more than hV2 billion radio and television home impressions. This figure is based on Nielsen ratings. The additional circulation given by networks and stations on sustaining programs would undoubtedly double, perhaps triple this figure. And 1954 will be bigger! Yes, the combination of broadcasters and their advertisers (who devote vast amounts of valuable time and talent to public service campaigns on the programs that they sponsor) is a powerful one, serving the nation and the community forcefully every day of the year. 1103
