16 RADIO DIGEST— '"'"tr^-fh Natio"01 Broadcast Auth oritv 17 CHRISTMAS CAROLS FILL ETHER AS MERRY YULETIDE SEASON OPENS HIGH LIGHTS OF THE AIR IF THERE is one time in ail the -hen the Radio fan feels vindicated for his interest in [casting, it is at Christmas time when the ether is so full of gay music that the dials fairly turn themselves. Carols which used to greet the ear on Christmas morning sung by strolling minstrels, now fill every home with a ^et. One of the elaborate performances to start the holiday season is the broadcasting of "Patience" by the Play Arts Guild of Baltimore over TVBAL. Friday. December 17. Besides Patience, the dairymaid, Reginalds Bunthorne, Archibald Grosvenors, the poets, a chorus of rapturous maidens and officers of the Dragoons make this a colorful broadcast. The "Messiah" will be given from coast to coast by various groups of choral singers. The College and Brookings chorus will give this well known composition, December 19 at the college station, KFDY. Sunday, December 26, KLDS also gives a performance. Sunday afternoon, December 19, the University of Iowa glee clubs will sine "The Righteous Branch" from WSTTI. Carollers chanting their songs under candle-lit windows — Scrooge, "the grasping, scraping, clutching old sinner" who did not have Christmas in his heart — Tiny Tim. piping "God bless us every one." will come to life before KOA's microphone Christmas eve in a radio dramatization of Dickens' immortal "Christmas Carol." The Cleveland Symphony orchestra with two successful Radio concerts behind the organization will broadcast again through WTAM December 16 beginning at eight o'clock Eastern1 time. Between announcements short sketches of the music and composers will be given. The holiday season finds our old friend WOAW appearing on the ether waves with the new call WOW. When this station uses its new call it will also go on the air with a brand new broadcasting equipment with a minimum power of 1000 watts and a maximum of 2500 watts. Young advertising writers and even veterans will appreciate the talks being given this month on advertising from WOR. December 16, 23, 30 and January 6 at 8:30 p. m. William C. Freeman will tell why the human element is the biggest thing in advertising today. Mr. Freeman knows his subject because he has probably sold more advertising than any other advertising man today. The old year has faded away to radio and the new year has been heralded in by broadcasting stations for several years. In a coast to coast Happy New Year radio program, numbers of which will be dedicated to the various states of the Union, WEMC. The Radio Lighthouse, will broadcast especially for the Atlantic and Pacific coast states. WEMC also announces a sermon by Mr. Westworth, its staff pastor to be delivered during the first hour of the new year.
