Personalities — All Set to Go
That no time might be lost Rear Admiral William H. Bullard, chairman, issued a formal call for the first meeting of the new Federal Radio Commission. It was received in Washington from China via Radio and cable. The other four members convened and elected Eugene O. Sykes, vice-chairman. The first formal hearings were announced for March 31 and April 1.
Because of dilatory floor tactics on the part of Congress no funds were provided. But various departments of the government are cooperating to give the members every possible facility to function.
BULLARD, WILLIAM H. G., Media, Pa., U. S. N., rear admiral, retired. Republican, 61 years old. Graduated from U. S. naval academy. Served in SpanishAmerican war and in Atlantic fleet and American division of battleships in world war. Superintendent naval Radio service, 1912-'16. Appointed on national Radio commission for six years.
CALDWELL, O. H., Bronxville, N. Y., electrical engineer, graduate of Purdue university, Republican, 39 years old. Born in Lexington, Ky. Editor of Radio Retailing, in New York. Member American Institute of Electrical Engineers, Radio committee American Engineering council, and American Institute of Radio Engineers. Appointed on Radio commission for five years.
SYKES, EUGENE O., lawyer, Jackson, Miss.; Democrat; 55 years old; former justice of the Supreme court of Mississippi. Appointed on Radio commission for four years. Mr. Sykes voluntarily resigned from his office on j the Supreme Court bench in order to practice law in 1924. His legal knowledge is said to be peculiarly fitted to be of service to the Radio he will be assisted duties by department of justice.

Night Flight Guided With Radio Beacons
DETROIT, Mich. — A Stout-Ford three motored plane landed here at night after a flight to Dayton and return, during which it was guided every foot of the route by directions received by Radio. It marked the first use of the Radio beacon fo;r commercial aviation. Both the voice and the dot and dash systems were used.
DILLON, JOHN F., federal radio supervisor at San Francisco; 50 years old; Republican. Served 20 years in U. S. signal corps. In 1912, in Chicago, became wireless inspector for ships. Three years later promoted to be chief Radio supervisor at San Francisco. Served in signal corps in France during war with rank of mMmmiMm major. Appointed to Radio commission for two years.
BELLOWS, H. A., director radio station WCCO, Minneapolis; Democrat; 42 years old; born in Portland, Me.; graduate of Harvard ; former music critic Minneapolis News; managing editor the Bellm a n, Minneapolis, and later the Northwestern Miller. Appointed to Radio commission for three years. Mr. Bellows has made a special study of Radio conditions by visiting many of the leading broadcasters throughout the country.

At the time of this writing Radio Digest is conducting the only general public national vote on the most popular stations in the country. It is not printing up the ballots in wholesale bundles for exploitation purposes, nor authorizing others to do so. It is making a sincere effort to obtain as fairly a representative poll as possible through the printed ballot as filled out by Radio Digest readers or friends of the readers.
Favors Cutting Small Stations
Wendell Plummer of Tocsin, Ind., enclosinghis ballot, wrote:
"I think that stations under 500 watts should go first, if the Radio commission uses the elimination method of clearing the air. Smaller stations do not, as a rule furnish as good a program as the larger ones; nor can they be heard over as great a distance. As I look through the log books I find most of the smaller ones in bunches of nine or ten, and the majority of them on the same wave. We sure hope that Radio Digest, through its readers, can be of some assistance to the new commission."
D. H. Slusing, 734 Sampson street, Moberly, Mo., writes:
"The finest thing the commission could do for me personally would be to end forever by banishment the bunko broadcasters who advertise twenty-four hours a day."

"I could send in more than ten favorite stations but I think some cities have more than their share of stations. Give us the good stations that have something worth while. We enjoy the chain stations most." Sore on Old Fiddlers

"When the ax falls upon some of the over numerous broadcasting stations I hope it includes some of the Old Fiddling ones. There are several of them."
Robert C. Potter, R. R. 3, Beamsville, Ont., has a special, homemade one tube set with which he has logged 271 stations of an average distance of 500 miles for all, complains of "overmodulation."
