12 RATIO DIGEST— !Uit.itrated~The National Broadcast Authority 13 MUSIC WEEK CELEBRATED NATIONALLY THROUGH SPECIAL PROGRAMS HIGH LIGHTS OF THE AIR RADIO is given official recognition in the world of music with the announcement by the National Music Committee that the nationwide celebration of Music Week, beginning May 1, will be inaugurated with a Radio program. The gala concert of the week will be given during the Atwater Kent hour from WEAK and linked stations. World famous artists of the opera and concert stage have been secured for this special program. The artists include Frances Alda. soprano; Relnald Werrenrath, baritone; Mary Lewis, soprano; Charles Hackette, tenor; Jeanne Gordon, contralto; and Paul Kochanskl, violinist. "Melodies Immortal," a synchronization of dialogue and music in dramatic form, is a rare setting for old loved tunes by famous composers, and will fittingly commemorate National Music Week on the special program Monday, May 2, from WAIU, Columbus. The presentation which lias been arranged by Don Bernard, director, employs the services of the Aladdin Temple Shrine band, Trinity Boys' choir, WAIU Petite symphony, Ruth Basden, soprano, and many other well known Columbus artists. Join in the meeting of the Third Pan American Commercial conference and the Annual convention of the United States Chamber of Commerce and meet informally In this way over WRAP or the other chain stations broadcasting the event, the delegates from twenty-one of our neighboring republics. The martial strains from the antinnis of <-iu-h one of these republics will be played while the country's flag is raised. After this ceremony President Coolidge will talk to the delegates. The hunie station broadcasting is Wl:<\ "Jazz vs. Music" is the title which Dana S. Merriman, musical director of WTIC, gives to the 18th lesson of a course in music appreciation to be broadcast to the pupils of the public schools of New England, Wednesday morning, May 4, at 9:40 a. m. In this lesson Mr. Merriman will make clear to the children the difference between the music of the old masters when the gavotte and the minuet were favorites and that of more recent days when jigs, reels and waltzes came into their own. Pacific Coast fans will be glad to know that the Russian trio resumes its regular appearances at KFI Sunday. May 8, at 6 p. m., after an absence of two months. The members of the trio are Boris Myronoff, pianist, Mlsch Spiegel, violinist, and Alexander Borissoff, cellist. Something new in minstrels Is promised Monday night, May 9, when the Knights of Columbus, broadcasting over KOA, present a sailors' minstrel show on board a battleship. The interlocutor Is the captain; the endmen, the deck swabs; the chorus of forty voices, the mates; the soloists are officers. Hilarious, witty, full of the froth of the altogether absurd, it may safely be predicted that Radio listeners are due for an evening of good laughs. When Elsie Alexander, pianist, plays before the Radio audience of WBBM at 8:15 p. m. Tuesday night, May 10, her program will include piano numbers by Scarlotti, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Beethoven, and Chopin. She will top off her program with several selections from modern Spanish composers. Young pianists will enjoy Miss Alexander's Interpretations because, as a graduate of the Royal Academy in London and a coaching pupil of E. Robert Schmltz in Paris, she brings a European influence.
