Has written music for films, and conducted theatrical productions for the R.A.F. Has broadcast regularly since 1935. Very interested in contemporary British composers of light music. Joined Artists' Rifles in September, 1939. Commissioned Royal Sussex Regiment, and served in Egypt in 1940. Liaison Officer Free French Forces 1940; Captain, Aide-de-Camp to Maj. General Sir Edward Spears (H.M. Minister of Syria and Lebanon) 1941-42. O.C. Forces Broadcasting Stations, Beirut and Jerusalem, 1942-45. Radio programmes include " Count of Monte Cristo," "Table Under the Tree," " Fireworks at Cremona " and " This is London." BEACHCROFT, THOMAS OWEN. B.B.C. Assistant Director of Publicity Overseas, b. Clifton, Bristol, 3rd September, 1902. Joined B.B.C. as announcer and news readers in 1924. Probaby best known as a short story writer. Address : c/o B.B.C, London. Educated Clifton College; Balliol College, Oxford. First with B.B.C in 1924, joined them again in 1941. Has contributed many short stories to magazines and papers. Author of several books of short stories, the most recent being his " Collected Stories," 1946. Author of " Calling All Nations" issued in 1942 by the B.B.C. on the tenth anniversary of the opening of the Overseas Service. Author also of " British Broadcasting " in the " British Life and Thought " series. Contributor of several short stories read over the air. Is the son of R. O. Beachcroft, Mus.Doc, for many years Director of Music, Clifton College. Ran for Oxford against Cambridge, 1922 and 1924. BEARD, PAUL. Violinist, b. Birmingham, 4th August, 1901. Leader of B.B.C. Symphony Orchestra. Address: 47, Forty Lane, Wembley Park. Phone: Arnold 4846. Began learning violin at the age of three and a half under his father and made his first public appearance at six. " Professional " solo violinist from the time he was eight. Scholarship holder at R.A.M. Elected A.R.A.M. in 1922 and F.R.A.M. in 1939. Now professor at the R.A.M. and has also been professor at R.C.M. Appointed leader of the City of Birmingham Orchestra in 1921, and held that position until 1932 when he accepted Sir Thomas Beecham's offer of the leadership of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Remained with L.P.O. until 1936, when he was appointed leader of the B.B.C. Symphony Orchestra. Has also been leader, of the National Orchestra of Wales, and the orchestras at Scarborough and Llandudno. Married Joyce, daughter of the late Captain Cass-Smith, in 1925, and has a son and daughter. Apart from music interested mainly in sport, cricket, tennis, golf, fishing, boxing and gardening. Golf handicap in 1945 was 2. BEAVER. STANLEY H. Educational broadcaster, b.
