JAZZ IN LOS ANGELES 30 JUNE 14 A singer who would probablyhave proved very interesting to the Loraaxes in their quest for obscure folk artists is the ancient Negro who for many years has shuffled along the streets of the east side of Los Angeles, singing his songs for nickels and dimes, and beating out his own accompaniment with his hands on th e sides of a five gallon oil can slung around his neck. Doug Daley, president of the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce, says the old fellow was quite well known around the old railroad depot, and rain or shine, was always dressed in several layers of clothes.plus an overcoat. His favorite song was a ballad which had one verse for each of the forty eight states, the last line of every verse always being "Dat shot got 'em". Doug is a noncollecting jazz fan who used to hear Jelly Roll Morton's and other good jazz bands during his college days at Notre Dame from 1926 to 1930. According to Doug, Jelly was really a big shot in those days. Well, the manager of the Jade Palace Cafe on Hollywood Boulevard just couldn't stand to be without that wonderful music all week, and instead of Cry's band playing Sundays only, they are now playing full time. So for the first time in the memory of the oldest inhabitant, Los Angeles has a traditional New Orleans jazz band playing a steady commercial job. And they are really drawing the customers. Mutt Carey was back in Louisiana for a couple of weeks, and the band opened without him. However, they did not lack a New Orleans trumpet, for no one else than Mr. Ory himself started playing the lead on that instrument, and while his technique is not as good as on the trombone, he really plays with authority, and with a vibrato that rattles the glasses. But Mutt is back now, and the situation is too good to be true. Turk Murphy was in town for a few days, and after rendering homage at the feet of
