Joe "Deadpan" Darensbourg has had some rare experiences during his musical career. Once, when he was stranded in Prescott, a town high in the hills of Arizona, he earned his carfare home by taking a job pumping a player piano and playing his clarinet simultaneously. Another time, when he was with Dr. Moon's Medicine Show, and sales of the elixir of life were slow, Joe was hungry, and decided to try a new way of getting a good meal. So he went to the finest section of town, picked one of the best homes, and actually got down on his hands and knees and started nibbling on the grass in the front yard, figuring he would arouse the sympathy of the lady of the house. She was not long in appearing, and asked him what was wrong. Joe said, "Ma'am, I'm so hungry I feel like eating grass"-. So the lady replied, "Well, if you really are that hungry, come on around to the back yard; the front lawn has just been mowed.

The California Labor School of San Francisco has featured, of interest to jazzis"ts, a series of "Jazz Talks" as a scheduled part of their spring term curriculum. The talks were given by Bob Waller and Ralph Aufderheide covering jazz and blues musicology and history, illustrated with a generous sprinkling of good records .
