Orin Blackstone An intriguing item for this column comes from Robert Waller of San Francisco. He writes that he and several of his friends recently viewed a revival of the old gangster movie, "Scarface," starring Paul Muni. Of particular interest to hot jazz fans is that nisrht club scene about midwaythrough the picture. Waller and his group are convinced that Frank Teschemacher's clarinet is in the soundtrack. They admit that their chief interest is in New Orleans jazz and do not claim to be experts on Chicago, but they would be interested to know what some Tesch specialists think about this possibility — and so would a lot of other followers of hot jazz. Bob also reports the discovery of Henry Brown as the piano accompaniment to Mary Johnson on the following: Decca 7014 Black Gal Blues (9336) Deceitful Woman Blues (9326). The recent query about how to unscramble the Billv Banks-Baron Lee (Blue Rhythm Band) items on the dime store labels brought in a great deal of mail. It all tended to confuse the issue still further, or at least to indicate that the names of Banks and Lee were used rather haphazardly on the same titles, depending upon the label. For instance, Fred Ramsey, Jr.. has this one under the name of Billy " Banks and the Blue Rhythm Boys : Perfect 15605 Cabin in the Cotton (11751-1) The Scat Song (11360-1) The same titles, however, are in the writer's possession on Melotone 12381 and 12366, respectively, under Baron NOVEMBER, 1945 Lee's name. The master number 11651a is stamped in the wax of The Scat Song, though. The coupling as reported for the Perfect also appeared on Oriole 2464 as a Banks number, according to Sigmund Schechter. Ramsey also has the following under Billy Banks' name on Romeo 1842 : Minnie the Moocher's Wedding Da\ (11752-1) Heat Waves (11363-1) While I have the first side under Lee's name on Melotone 12366, coupled with the Scat Song above. Baron Lee and the Blue Rhythm Boys get the full credit for the following, according to M. J. Hall and Sigmund Schechter : Perfect 15621 Mighty Sweet (11788-1) The Groivl (11767-1) This was reissued on Oriole 2489. Arthur Appelbaum reports that he has the following Baron Lee on Conqueror 8030 : You Gave Me Everything But Love (12182-1) Sentimental Gentleman from Georgia (12181-1) As a final headache, Bill Sturrup reveals that the Melotone 12515 version of Jazz Cocktail and Smoke Rings is credited only to the Blue Rhythm Band, with not a mention of Baron Lee or Billy Banks. So it is just a matter of "name your choice." In a recent column the up-to-date personnel for the Johnny Dunn Columbias with Jelly Roll Morton was incorrectly attributed. This information came from Herman Rosenberg, along with a batch of other data with which he will be credited later. The writer promises to try to keep his notes straight, but asks that all those who have forwarded material to bear with him until he can dig out from under the snowstorm. (Continued on page 30.)
