Next came a record featuring that almost legendary trombonist Ike Rodgers. and that equally fabulous pianist Henry Brown, Screenin' The Blues and It Hurts So Good (Century 3003). This was followed by an extremely early Jelly-Roll Morton pair, Big Fat Ham and Muddy Water Blues (Century 3004), a genuine collector's item if ever there was one. Then came a relatively unknown gem which certainly deserved being, as Dickens had it, recalled to life: A Little Bit Closer and Jim Jackson's Kansas City Blues by Tiny Parham (Century 3005). Junie Cobb's Chicago Buzz and East Coast Trot (Century 3006) ended Sam's first half dozen on a note of triumph, with clarinetist Dodds, also saxophonist Cobb, pianist Jimmy Blythe, and banjoist Eustern Woodfork providing the punch. These six sides were, so"' good, in fact, that I asked myself how Sam could possibly expect to maintain the level he had thus established. He not . only kept up his standard, however, he soon raised it still higher with the issuance of six more records of equal rarity and even greater intrinsic value. First there was Jackass Blues and Frog Tongue Stomp by Lovie Austin's Serenades (Century 3007), featuring at theii best two late jazz giants who perhaps more than any others personified the classic New Orleans manner, cornetist Tommy Ladnier and clarinetist Johnny Dodds. Second was a magnificent, hard-toget coupling by the band which typified collectively that same style Ladnier and Dodds did individually, King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band, Krooked Blues and Alligator Hop (Century 3008). The label lists the following personnel, contributed by Baby Dodds: cornetists King Oliver and Louis Armstrong, trombonist Honore Dutrey, clarinetist Johnny Dodds, saxophonist Stomp Evans, pianist Lil Hardin, banjoist Bill Johnson, drummer Baby Dodds. Sam is a stickler for accuracy, as all engaged in this sort of enterprise ought to lie but unfortunately are not. Sam won't ordinarily list a name unless he is himself absolutely certain that the person played on the particular side in question. This record is one case in which Sam somehow made a mistake, probably accepting Baby's memory a little too readily. Conscientious as ever, Sam is anxious to correct it immediately. "I want you to put in print," he wrote me a short time ago, "that I know it's NOT Johnny Dodds on the" Oliver Krooked Blues/ Alligator Hop." Sam's right, the Noone-NicholasBigard school of Crescent City clarinetists played this way, but never Johnny Dodds. South African Blues and Piggly Wiggly Blues by the Windy Rhythm Kings followed (Century 3009), with Jimmy Cobb on cornet, Junie Cobb on clarinet, Ernie Smith On sax, Prince on piano, and Jimi Bertrand on drums. This record presefl the best example I know of the two mill discussed, little heard Cobbs, which is cj tainly recommendation enough in itse Furthermore, both sides are real jazz aj hot. Hot Potatoes and Steal Away Bh (Century 3010) is nearly all John! Dodds, backed on the latter by the Pa mount Pickers and spelled on the forn by the guitar and vocal of Blind Bl and the assorted traps of Jimmy Bertrai Southern Stomps (Century 3011) sho how Oliver's Creole Jazz Band soun< when Dodds was actually on clarinet great number by the late Richard Jones, and a great version by the Ki 'Personnel is that given for Century 3C On the reverse is Red Hot Hottentot composer J. C. Johnson. Probable j sonnel, according to Sam, includes tri peter Jabbo Smith, trombonist Cha Irvis, and clarinetist Omer Simeon. Certain it's Jabbo, myself, and I'd hate bet against Sam on the other two. Trai ing Blues and Charleston Mad by Lc Austin's Serenaders (Century 3012) I tures Ladnier once again, and this t: Tommy blows it all the way down. Thj reissuing with an ear to the loudspea instead of an eye to the cash register, I hope, and indeed feel sure, that in end Sam will find it also pays off.
