Announcin the first annual RECORD CHANGER AMATEUR JAZZ BAND COMPETITION To discover and focus public attention on the best of the young amateur jazz bands, the Record Changer is sponsoring a jazz record contest. If jazz is to remain a vital factor in American music, young musicians must be encouraged. Some amateur groups have managed to fight their way to recognition ; but the Record, Changer is convinced that many other local bands deserve attention— must be recognized if jazz is to continue and grow. This competition is our effort to seek out these new jazz pioneers and, by issuing their records and publicizing their activities, encourage them, and other young bands. Leading jazz critics will pass judgment on the entries — Good Jazz, not the following of a particular style, will be the sole criterion. Any amateur -band is eligible. Your outfit can enter the contest merely by submitting two sides before the November 15 deadline, (and by following the other rules given below). First Prize: The winning band's two sides will be issued on a special Record Changer label, and given nation-wide distribution. Standard royalty rates will be paid. A full story on the band's personnel will be featured in the Record Changer. Second and Third Prizes: Nation-wide distribution, on Record Changer label, of a record coupling the best sides by the second and third place bands. Plus a feature story in the magazine on these bands, and on the fourth and fifth place bands. Judges: George Avakian . . . Charles Edward Smith . . . Bucklin Moon . . . Sidney Finkelstein . . . Rudi Blesh . . . Bill Grauer, Jr. . . . Orrin Keepnews . . . Paul Bacon . . . and others to be announced later, including leading musicians. Rules: 1. Only bands the nucleus of whose membership has not been commercially recorded are eligible. 2. Two sides of a ten-inch record constitutes an entry. Only two sides may be submitted by any one group. 3. Records may be either studio acetates or of the home recording variety. NOTE: If the quality of the recording of any winning entry is not of sufficiently high caliber to permit satisfactory commercial pressing, it will be impossible to award such winner the issuance and distribution described above. 4. No entries can be returned to contestants. The Record Changer guarantees, however, that no commercial, or other unauthorized usage will be made by us of any non-winning entry. 5. The decisions of the judges as to merit, eligibility, and observance of these rules, will be final. 6. All entries must be accompanied by a brief description of band personnel : including age, instrument, experience. 7. All entries must be received by November 15, 1949. 8. Send entries to : THE RECORD CHANGER, 125 EaSalle Street, New York 27, N. Y.
