edged Jelly Roll Morton for third, 114 to 104.
Piano: Morton ran second to no one here, with 412 points. Fats Waller had 160, and Earl Hines and Teddy Wilson made it a dead heat for third place with 67 apiece.
Female Vocalist: Bessie Smith, of course — 381. Ma Rainey next with 139, closely pursued by Billie Holiday's 127.
Banjo: Johnny St. Cyr, with little competition and a quite high total of 367. Bud Scott had 120, and Lawrence Marrero, 79.
Clarinet: Johnny Dodds' 349 points outclassed Benny Goodman's 192. Jimmy Noone ranked next with 79.
Drums: Baby Dodds had a high margin of superiority, though slightly less total votes than his older brother, with 337. Zutty Singleton's 156 was next best; Gene Krupa scored 110.
Bass: No competition here for Pops Foster's 322. Ed Garland drew 93 points, Bob Haggard 85.
Trombone: Kid Ory gathered 304 points; Tea wasn't too far behind with 253. George Brunies had 153.
Saxophone: The same winning total — 304 — for Sidney Bechet, in overall ballotting that disregarded the pitch of the sax. Frankie Trumbauer's 108 was a shade better than Stomp Evans' 103.
Guitar: Eddie Lang proved to be the only white jazzman to head any category, his 202 points being better than Eddie Condon's 140 and Bud Scott's 120. (That 120, incidentally, was exactly as many points as Bud received as a banjo player, indicating that less indecision on the part of his supporters might have given the late Ory rhythm man a more prominent position.)
Tuba: With less voting on this unfortunately semi-obsolete instrument than in any other category, it was Bill Benford with 114, followed by Cy St. Clair (103) and Pete Briggs (91).
All in all, much fun and few oddities, and the satisfying of our curiosity as to whether our readers actually do think along pretty much the same jazz lines as we. (You do!)
