C. star studded shellac {Continued from Page\2) single voice and a lone piano thereon impressed is "Ella Sings Gershwin." Ella does such luxurious Gershwin tidbits as Soon, maybe, Someone to Watch Over Me, Looking For a Boy, and Ellis Larkin's piano fits ably and fully into the frame. Unfortunately, against this rich melodic tapestry Ella is, surprisingly, listless and indifferent, with overtones of Sarah Vaughan's notebending and trying out an assortment of widely-divergent last notes before deciding on the one. Shame on Ella, especially when Decca was in the mood to experiment so recklessly. Popular organ records are few and far between, and pipe organ discs are a rarity indeed: Nevertheless, King has just baked a batch of biscuits that are calculated to bring back memories of Jesse Crawford at his Victor best. They are by someone called George Wright, and I never heard of him either, but he has a grand sense of the rhythm of a song without spoiling it. The recording is robust, with a tremendous deep-hall effect, and the arrangement of Night and Day, weaving in the theme of the most popular movement of Moonlight Sonata, is as effective as it is appropriate. The other titles are equally well arranged and presented and they are Always, Begin the Beguine, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Body and Soul and Stardust. I almost passed these by because I thought that one more version of most of these old chestnuts would break the camel's back, but they are good enough to make them all seem like new again. behind the cobwebs (Continued from Page 5) tone 91000 and 92000 series, Sterling — 91000 series, Royal— 91600 and 91700 se DIXIELAND LP RECORDS Send for Complete Catalogue Special Bonus with Each Order. Label of the month: Production delays have kept this feature out of the column for the last couple of issues but we're back in action now. This month's item is Melody 1435. The side shown is Wet Yo' Thumb as by Henderson's Dance Players. The reverse is Farewell Blues as by the same. No masters show anywhere on the disc. The catalog number is stamped into the wax on each side. Label is black with white border. The cross hatching is also white as are the letters. The band certainly is not that of Fletcher Henderson. No jazz content. Who can connect this label up with any others? Carleton H. Davis, of Orchard Park, N. Y., is seeking the identity of a trumpet or cornet player. He's the guy who is accompanist to Fannie Johnson (she's Viola McCoy on Romeo — which name, if either, is correct?) on Papa If You Can't Do Better— Cameo 1066. Here's the way Mr. Davis puts it, "Blue like Oliver, but more humorous— a little like Joe Smith on Ethel Waters' / Found a New Baby but a little higher and more incisive. I just picked up a copy of Monette Moore on Columbia— Take It Easy I Get It Fixed and I swear it couldn't be anything else but the same horn. As far as I know I haven't heard it anywhere else." Can anyone identify this horn man? C. Hilding Bergquist, of Minneapolis, points out that the Chances Are by Roy Carroll and his Sands Point Orchestra we mentioned in Sept. on Ha 1403 is the same as Ok 41551 as by Cloverdale Country Club Orch. Woody Backensto clarifies this further by giving the following data: Recorded for Columbia in New York City on Oct. 14, 1931 — Original master for Chance Are (151841) never issued. Renumbered master (100589) issued on Ha 1403 as Roy Carroll and renumbered master (405143) issued on Ok 41551 as Cloverdale Country Club Orch. Also cut that date was / Got the Ritz from the One I Love (151842) which was never issued. Final item: Dick Holbrook, of Bedford, N. Y., sends us the personnel for the Princeton Triangle Jazz Band of 1924-5. They recorded ten sides for Columbia Personal (Nos. 30, 31, 59, 63, and 114) and included : Clem Wells, tp. ; Frank Orvis and Avery Sherry, Saxes; Dave Danforth, violin; Herb Sanford, p.; Ed Botsford, Bj.-g. ; Kirk Gilmore, dr. Dick got the personnel from Danforth and Sanford who are friends of his.
