Page 8 THE REEL JOURNAL June 16, 1931. YOUTH INTEREST “U” Injects Interest in Serials Universal City—In planning the first two of the four serials that Universal will make this year, ex¬ ceptional care has been taken to provide interest for the young theatre-goer. The same care will be provided in the other two. For instance, in “Fighting with Buffa¬ lo Bill,” Henry MacRae has as¬ signed the role of Buffalo Bill to John Mack Brown. John Mack Brown is a natural kids’ hero. His football exploits and the majority of the roles he has played in a se¬ rial for the first time when “Fight¬ ing with Buffalo Bill” goes into production, is John Wayne. Wayne is also a very romantic figure to the youth of the land. The role he played in “The Big Trail,” the publicity he received, the personal appearances which he made in connection with that frontier pic¬ ture, have established his value in this direction. Universal has also signed Jim Thorpe, the Indian Olympic ath¬ lete and football player, for the serial. Thorpe will play the role of Chief Black Crow. FIVE AT FOX West Coast Studios Busy on Product Hollywood— Two new produc¬ tions, “Bad Girl” and “Wicked,” were started last week at the Fox West Coast Studios, and another, “The Brat,” went into work this week. This will make a total of five before the cameras, as “Mere¬ ly Mary Ann” and “The Plutocrat” are now nearing completion. “Skyline,” which Sam Taylor is to direct with Hardie Albright, Thomas Meighan, Maureen O’Sul¬ livan, Myrna Loy, Jack Kenny, Alice Ward, Kendall McComas, Stanley Fields and Donald Dilla- way in the cast, is scheduled to start immediately. Sign Miss Rogers New York — Ginger Rogers, stage and screen star, who recent¬ ly closed her latest Broadway en¬ gagement in “Girl Crazy,” has been signed by RKO-Pathe to play opposite Eddie Quillan in his next vehicle, “Eddie Cuts In.” Produc¬ tion on this George Kibbe Turner vehicle will start immediately upon Miss Rogers’ arrival at Cul¬ ver City. STEELE’S FIRST Carr Completes Initial Tiffany Western Hollywood —Trem Carr, produc¬ er of the Bob Steele action west¬ erns for Tiffany has completed “Near the Trail’s End,” the first in the series of eight scheduled on the company’s new program. The cast supporting Steele in¬ cludes Marion Shockley, Jay Mor- ley, Hooper Atchley, Si Jenks, Henry Roquemore and Murdock McQuarrie.
