38 REEL and SLIDE Educational Films Releases Turkish Pictures In the recent shipment from Constantinople of single reel subjects by the Bureau of Pictures of the American Red Cross, for release through the exchanges of the Educational Films Corporation, are the first photographs of the Sultan going to church, a very elaborate and complicated affair, as it is done in Turkey. Interesting scenes that show the preparations and the grand street parade that seems to be a very necessary part of his trip to the mosque are concluded with the "movie" debut of the Sultan himself, his first appearance before the camera. Another of the features will be pictures of the famous mosque "Santa Sofia," which has been called the most interesting building on the world's surface. For five hundred years it has been a Turkish mosque, the last Christian service having been held in 1453. The Turk has added a minaret or two to convert the edifice into a mosque, otherwise the building stands exactly as it did centuries ago. The teaching of Islam forbids the true believer to destroy the face of a picture, the statute of a man, or any writings, because religious meaning may be hidden in them. The building is a veritable treasure house of paintings and sculpture, concealed from Christian eyes for centuries. Coke Air Delivery Is Filmed U. C. Films, Inc., producers and distributors of industrial and advertising films, recently made moving pictures of the first deliverv of coke ever made by aeroplane. The Milwaukee Solvay Coke Company employed the Geo. W. Browne Aeroplanes, Inc., to deliver a quantity of coke by aeroplane from Milwaukee to Oconomowoc, a nearby point. The pictures illustrate the flight and the delivery with closeups of the pilot, as well as views from the plane making its commercial journey. U. C. Films also recently produced a full reel picture for the Elks of Wisconsin which is getting projection in the leading theaters of the State. This picture shows the Elks Gathering in full swing and had a week's run at the Alhambra, Milwaukee's de luxe photoplay house. Public Welfare Department Offers Free Showings The department of public welfare of the state of Illinois is offering a free exhibition of moving picture films in any hall where no admission is charged. The motion pictures give a great idea of the vast work the state of Illinois is doing. They show the senate and house in session, scenes about the capitol building and activities of many of the state charitable and penal institutions. There are scenes from the Lincoln state colony, the Pontiac Reformatory, old and new penitentiaries, Chicago state hospital, St. Charles School for boys, training school for girls, industrial home for the blind, eye and ear infirmarv, Kankakee, Jacksonville, South Bartonville, Soldier Orphans Home, schools for the deaf and the blind and the soldiers' home. There are three old reels and three new reels of approximately 1,000 feet. The state does the showing, but requires there be no admission and the reels may be displayed in a hall, church or school house or public park. Prizma Pictures Alligators Prizma Natural Color Pictures photographers went to Florida to secure the material for what should be a most interesting picture, and have used alligators as the subject matter of this film, '"Gators." The cameraman went into the Everglades accompanied by two men in a canoe, and the pictures they brought out, bring to light some interesting facts concerning the sirenians. Like chickens, they come from eggs. The heat of the tropical sun and the decomposition of the vegetable matter hatches the eggs, but for the first two years alligators grow very slowly. Even when they are five months' old it is possible to hold a number of them in your hand at one time. In addition to the capture of an alligator, equally interesting scenes of an alligator farm in Florida are reproduced in nature's full colors.
