The Jack Paar Show has been held over for a third week in Hollywood and will now return to NY on Nov 24. It had originally been slated for only two weeks of West Coast originations.......A legal point established by the U. S. Supreme Court; that a satire or a parody of a copyrighted work violates the rights of the owner of the copyright; has led to the purchase of a license by Jack Benny's.J & M Productions, Inc., to satirize the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer 1944 movie "Gaslight," and the further purchase by J & M of complete rights to a half-hour filmed comedy program made by CBS several years ago as a Jack Benny show episode. Actually, J & M Productions bought a seven-year license to satirize the film from Metro and a further purchase of sevenyear rights to satirize the original stage play, from author Patrick Hamilton. The half-hour filmed comedy program was made prior to Benny's organization of J & M to produce his live and film programs, which necessitated the buy from CBS. . The halfhour film, to be presented as one of The Jack Benny Programs this season, starred Barbara Stanwyck, Bob Crosby, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson and Don Wilson......Pontiac Motor Division, GMC, thru MacManus, John & Adams, Inc., will sponsor the NBC Opera Company's ninth presentation of Amahl and the Night Visitors on Dec 14, Sunday, 5-6pm NYT, in live color from NY. One amazing record hung up by the program is that except for the part of Amahl, to be played for the third time by Kirk Jordan, all the other singers have been in all the TV shows. . Rosemary Kuhlmann is the mother; Andrew McKinley, Leon Lishner and David Aiken are the Kings Caspar, Balthaser and Melchior, and Francis Monachino is the page. The opera by Gian Carlo Menotti was originally commissioned by NBC and given its first NBC presentation Dec 24, 1951. The original Amahl role was sung by Chet Allen. The original sponsor was Hallmark for its greeting cards and the first program was seen over a 35-station network. The 13 re-runs of Shirley Temple's Storybook to be seen on the ABC net during 1959, will be presented every third week, starting January 5, Monday, 7:30-8:30pm NYT, thru June 1 after which the program will take a summer hiatus and then resume on Sept 14, running to the end of the year. John H. Breck, Inc., one of the three current sponsors of the show on NBC, will be the full sponsor of the ABC telecasts, thru N. W. Ayer & Son, Inc. The last NBC program will be "Mother Goose," to be seen on Dec 21.......The Du Pont Show of the Month schedule, after tomorrow's (13) production of "The Winslow Boy," lists the CBS production of John Patrick's "The Hasty Heart" to be produced by Gordon Duff on Dec 18, Thursday, 9:30-llpm NYT; the Talent Associates production of Sir James Barrie's "What Every Woman Knows," on Jan 28, Wednesday, 9:30-llpm NYT; and the CBS production of "Hamlet," performed by The Old Vic Company, to be produced and directed by Ralph Nelson, Feb eh, Tuesday, 9:30-llpm. The first of the big year-end football game telecasts (calendar order), the NBC telecast of the East-West Shrine Game at Kezar Stadium, San Francisco, is completely sold out to sponsors. The Dec 27, Saturday, game will be one-half sponsored by The Savings and Loan Foundation thru McCann-Erickson, Inc., with R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. thru William Esty Co., Inc., and Whitehall Laboratories thru Ted Bates and Co., Inc., each picking up a quarter of the game. MID-WEEK SPECIAL 11/12/58 Page 2
