ANTONIO MORENO JOINS PATHE Pathe has secured Tony Moreno to appear in special features under the Astra brand of Pathe plays. This promising young star has been with the Vitagraph for three years and has done some fine work under that banner. He has been featured and co-starred with Edith Story, and has been seen in many Vitagraph plays. He left the coast recently and returned to the east after finishing some big pictures here. ON THE LOT “Isadore Bernstein, who gave us Universal City, is in town with a George Walsh crop of hair and a print of “Humility,” the first of the big series he is about to release. Issy is an idealist. I know it, because he took me to lunch the other day and he ordered corned beef and cabbage!” So says H. H. Can Loan in the Trade Review. Charlie Mailes was almost — nearly — not quite — within an ace — by a hair’s breadth, etc., etc., held up the other night. Because of the near robbery, we can’t tell any more, cause nothin’ happened. Cameraman Moisant of the Gaumont Co., of San Francisco, who has been doing weekly stuff there has left for Someplace in France. Eugene W. Castle is covering this territory as successor, and in his place here is Blaine Walker. Moisant is a Frenchman, so he ought to be right at home in the war arena. Jewel Carmen has gone east to join Bill Farnum at the Eastern Fox studios. Herbert Rawlinson is almost in bed during the daytime. He caught a cold last week that has kept him from kicking up and smiling his way up and down the rialto. If William Fox says the war gods are the big rain-makers, who in blazes is making all this hot weather? Max Asher, Beatrice Van, Craig Hutchinson and the Asher comedies hit the U all together. Los Angeles Fireworks Co. 410 E. Third Street FLARES, SMOKE, FLASH POWDER, HAND GRENADES, FAKE ARTILLERY, Etc., Etc. WHARTONS MAKING RED CROSS BENEFIT FEATURE FILM Every part of the motion picture industry is bending an effort of much strength to put over the hundred million dollar raise tor the Red Cross, and Wharton, Inc. is not behind, for they are making a big film for this organization. The picture is for the country near Rochester, where the Eastman people are at work. They are helpingin the making of the picture, which is being donated by the Whartons. The National Guard, Red Cross, and other military organizations are a part of the film. REGISTERED Ann Luther, while in New York, started a Red Cross fund for the French orphans. Harold Lockwood is interested in telephones. Whoishe? Edna Craig has been nailed by the Big-U. Right through the foot. S. A. Sues, cameraman for Helen Holmes, is showing the latest in sub-titles. Chas. Ray left Triangle. Jack MacDermott, who directed for Universal, appeared in Kalem comedies and was on the stage, announced in my perfectly good left ear that he is going to direct Doug Fairbanks! Am I surprised? Well, somewhat, and yes, no, as Jack is quite a capable youth and has the courage of his convictions. And House Peters comes to the Alhambra in “The Heir of the Ages” with much good playing. Leave it to that man! And lo — Gene Pallette is in the cast. Reginald “Sparkling” Barker, one of Ince’s directors is held up on account of Bill Hart’s leaving Triangle. Barker is casting about for a story and players. He will not have to cast long. Universal pulled a publicity coup when they alleged they discovered a new movin pictur star in the Superba theatre. Hall Cooley was the recipient of a laughable poke the other day when we were seeking the ice box inside of the stove. Somebody was going to shoot a close-up of him and he had to wait half an hour under the lights and then no camera showed up. Sergt. Guy Price remarks that “It takes a good many feet to bring the footage of a movie ball room up to the required length.” Yes, Guy, quite correct. Ho, ho! Jack Wells is a director at U. City.
